How to React to Receiving a Bad Gift

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

Let’s face it, we all get those gifts we absolutely hate from someone we absolutely love.  But how are we supposed to tell them that we don’t like the gift?  The gift that they spent hours searching for, fighting through the holiday crowds just to buy because they think it’s the perfect gift for you.

If you find yourself in this predicament this holiday season, here is a guide on how to bite your tongue and react without completely offending the gift giver.

If the gift is hideous

How you want to react: “Are you serious, I’m almost insulted you thought I’d like this.”

How you should react: “How thoughtful of you! Thanks so much for thinking of me.”

If you already have that item

How you want to react: “Oh great, another one of these…”

How you should react: “I have one just like this! You know me so well!”

If the shirt/pant/dress/sweater is the wrong size

How you want to react: “Are you trying to tell me that I’m fat?”

How you should react: “I love it! But I think it may fit a bit better in a different size.”

If the gift is not age appropriate

How you want to react: “This would be a lovely gift… if I was five years old.”

How you should react: “This is so cute, my little sister would love it!”

If you just flat out don’t like the gift

How you want to react: “What in the world would make you think someone would want this?”

How you should react:  Shut up, smile and re-gift it.
