Go Purple for Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

November is dedicated to Alzheimer’s awareness. Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia in which people have difficulty with their memory, thinking and behavior. It is important to understand the causes of this disease as well as how to support it moving forward.

Some quick facts about Alzheimer’s:

1. Almost 2/3 of people with Alzheimer’s in America are women.

2. Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in America.

3. 1 in 3 senior citizens in America, die of Alzheimer’s, or another form of dementia.

4. Every 67 seconds someone in America develops this disease.

5. About 5.3 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease in 2015.

Although there is no clear cure, or a way to stop Alzheimer’s from progressing, there are ways to temporarily slow the worsening of dementia and improve the quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.
