Fall into Autumn Fashion: How to Cross Over Your Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

Fall is in the air, bringing with it a sudden temperature dip. Not ready to trade in your summer shorts, tanks and dresses yet? This year’s fall fashions are definitely something to get excited about, but if you’re still trying to hold onto summer, we’ll show you how to make the transition

It’s about time to break out our oversized sweaters, favorite jeans, and knee-high boots. But how exactly should we wear them while the season’s still changing?

Fashion week has made the fall essentials pretty clear. Flannel (obviously), mustard yellow sweaters (they look better than they sound, I promise!), burgundy jackets, and… geometric heels?

These may not seem that unique. I mean we’ve all seen the burnt oranges, yellows, and reds that come with the fall. And flannels? They’ve been around forever. This season, however, designers have added little twists to typical autumn attire to spice things up.

1. This fall, trade in your typical cotton flannel for one with a more feminine touch, like the chiffon one pictured.

This may not be the best flannel for warmth once December and January roll around, but while we’re still in our pumpkin-picking days this fabric is just right and will show off a unique style. Paired with shorts and combat boots, the look is a subtle transition into fall apparel.

2. And I promised that mustard yellow could be flattering, didn’t I? Not only is the color great, but the high/low design adds a little flare to your typical oversized sweater. This type of sweater is perfect to throw on with skinny jeans and knee-high boots before class—it shows that you like to be comfortable but still look stylish while you take notes.

3. On brisk days when the walkways to class become wind tunnels, keep yourself warm with a leather jacket or a collared pea coat. It’s not cold enough for your winter parka yet, and you can still sport summer’s tanks, tees, or light sweaters underneath! You probably have at least one of these in your closet already, but in a trendy color like burgundy? This year, Fashion Week insisted that jackets make a statement through color, like these do…

4. But the real fall fashion question is, how do we feel about these? (Jeffrey Campbell creation)

Lucy Hale seems to like the half-stiletto, half-platform style, flaunting these babies at the Teen Choice Awards this year…

What do you think?

I’m still trying to figure out how you walk in them, but I can’t think of a better way to make a statement at a Halloween party. I’m sure these will add a lot of flare to your French maid costume.

All in all, I think we have fall fashion under control. Don’t rush into anything—you can still wear summer tanks under your burgundy jacket, high/low sweaters with your favorite shorts, boots with dresses. Mix it up. Embrace the fall crossover!
