Do’s And Don’ts of 2017

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

We finally made it to another year! Let’s make every day of this year count and better than the last. Here are some ways to make this year count and ways to not repeat what you did in 2016.

Do: Be confident and speak up

It’s so important to speak your mind and speak up for yourself, otherwise you will go unnoticed. In a world in which strong and confident women are deemed as “what not to be,” it needs to end. Exert your inner confidence and allow yourself to spread your wings and you will soar.

Don’t: Come off as being rude or mean

Even though you should speak your mind and be confident, you can do it without coming off as being rude or mean. Be mindful of your language by making sure you do not tear down others with differing opinions, and speak professionally. As long as you can get your message across without getting angry, or using the wrong words, you are bound to win.

Do: Learn something new

This is probably a goal for every New Year, but honestly it is one that will always be fulfilled. We learn something new every day. Whether it is information about people, what is happening in the world or a math equation, we are always learning. However, this year, try to learn something more specific. It could be a new language, or learning about other people who are completely different from you by interacting with them and not listening to stereotypes, or even learn something new about yourself.

Don’t: Avoid self-growth

It is so important to learn from your past experiences and life lessons as a way of making new improvements within yourself. Understand that there is always room for growth and you can only become a better person by finding flaws, and working on them. Realize that not every flaw is a mistake or needs to be fixed, but find ways to improve yourself or grow as an individual whether it is intellectually, emotionally, physically, socially, etc.

Do: Stick to your guts

Make sure that this year you listen to what your heart says. Many times we ignore our inner thoughts and what our gut says, and follow what others tell us to do or want us to do. Not this year! Most of the time what your heart and gut says is usually right — don’t ignore it.

Don’t: Let others dictate your life decisions

If you stay true to yourself and follow your heart you will live a happy life. Do not let others tell you what to do because then you are not living your life or doing what makes you happy. Listen to yourself always.

Do: Relax and enjoy time with people that exercise positive energy

This is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. Surround yourself with positive energy and people who have your best interest at heart. Find time to relax and breathe to keep your sanity and live a fulfilling life.

Don’t: Stress over little things

There is no point in gaining several strands of gray hair by stressing out about little things in life. There is a solution to every problem. Be a problem solver not a creator.

Good luck and we wish you all a happy New Year. Make this year and every year better than the previous one.
