Your guide to the perfect Thanksgiving — in your own apartment!

Where has the semester gone? Midterms are over, finals are around the corner, and Thanksgiving break is in sight. What is the best part of Thanksgiving break? FOOD! But why wait until you get home to chow down? With our guide, you can celebrate the holidays with your second family at school the easy way. Whip up these simple, quick recipes for your friends and floormates to make sure everyone leaves campus happy and full. Bon appétit!

Turkey: Be warned: There is no fast way to cook turkey. But keep in mind how amazing it will taste after all your hard work!

Ingredients

  • 2 large yellow onions, cut in 1/2-inch rounds
  • 10- to 12-pound turkey
  • 4 to 5 cups stuffing
  • 3 medium carrots, peeled and cut in thirds crosswise
  • Coarse salt and ground black pepper

Cooking Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Place onions, neck, and heart in bottom of roasting pan. Fold wing tips under bird and place turkey breast side up on top of onions.
  2. Add stuffing to front and back cavities of turkey, making sure not to pack it tightly. Sprinkle turkey with salt and pepper. Add carrots around turkey.
  3. After 2 hours, add 2 cups of water to the bottom of the roasting pan.
  4. Roast about 3 hours, or until instant read thermometer in thickest part of thigh registers 170 degrees F. Let rest 1/2 hour before carving.

Ingredients

  • Two 16-ounce cans whole berry cranberry sauce
  • 2 teaspoons fresh orange peel, from about 1 orange
  • 1/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice, from about 1 orange
  • 1 tablespoon orange marmalade

Cooking Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix cranberry sauce, orange peel, orange juice, and marmalade to combine.

Bacon Smashed Red Potatoes: For all you meat and carb lovers like myself, here is a simple recipe that will put the twist on your Thanksgiving dinner! Nom noms!

Ingredients

  • 5 pounds red potatoes, 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inches long
  • 10 slices bacon (about 1/2 pound)
  • 2 to 2 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Cooking Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large pot cover potatoes with water. Water should be about 2 inches above potatoes. Salt the water, and bring it to a boil. Then reduce to a simmer. Simmer 30 to 35 minutes, or until tender and a fork can pierce the potato easily. Drain and put back into cooking pot.
  2. Meanwhile, lay bacon slices on a four-sided sheet pan. Cook 20 to 25 minutes or until crisp, turning once. Remove from pan and drain on paper towels. Coarsely chop.
  3. With potato masher, mash potatoes. Add buttermilk, salt, and bacon. Mash to combine.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 8 Braeburn apples, peeled and cut into 3/8-inch slices
  • 1 recipe double crust pie dough
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

 

Cooking Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees F. Place oven rack on lowest rung in oven.
  2. In a large bowl mix sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt to combine. Add apples and toss to mix. Transfer apple mixture to pie plate lined with uncooked pie dough.
  3. Dot top with butter. Cover top with uncooked pie dough crust. Seal edges and cut vents in top crust. Transfer pie to jelly roll pan.
  4. Bake on lowest shelf in oven 55-65 minutes, or until golden brown, the liquid in filling is bubbling and fruit falls off knife when pierced. Remove to rack to cool at least 2 hours
