Learning to Swim: Advice for freshmen on Getting Involved on CampusBy September 16, 2012 - 8:39pm We all went through it - you’re a freshman, still getting adjusted to college life. It’s normal for your main group of friends to be the people on your floor. It’s safe and easy, and not to mention very convenient. But think about how many people are on this campus – people you’ve never met or spoken to. Your future best friend could be right around the corner, and if you’re sticking with your floor mates for your entire first year, chances are good that you aren’t going to meet that person. I have compiled some ideas to help you branch out Syracuse: READ MORE |

Getting Involved, Syracuse StyleBy September 16, 2012 - 2:01pm This Wednesday, students flocked to the university’s quad, which resembled something like a carnival. Indeed it was a glorious day for the 2012 Student Involvement Fair at SU, where various clubs, organizations, and intramural teams set up shop in hopes of encouraging students—particularly freshmen and transfers—to become active outside the realm of academics. Tables laden with posters, pens, and sign up sheets, lined the quad’s sidewalks, as orange and blue balloons floated in the afternoon heat. READ MORE |

Dalai Lama to give SU a Peace of his MindBy September 16, 2012 - 1:26pm Other than basketball games, there are few events at the Carrier Dome that I have ever been reasonably excited about attending. This was true until a few weeks ago, when the university announced an all-star concert for peace, officiated by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. One World Community Foundation, a private non-profit organization founded by university trustee, Samuel Nappi, will sponsor the special benefit concert on October 9 and the panel discussion scheduled for October 8. While some proceeds from ticket sales will go towards a scholarship fund, the purpose of the event is for the community at large to acknowledge the mission of a “Common Ground for Peace.” READ MORE |

RARE New York Clothing Line debuts at Syracuse in the 12th Annual Fashion’s Conscience Fashion ShowBy April 29, 2012 - 9:15pm I remember meeting Ike Boakye, founder of RARE New York, for the first time and noticing his whole team with these RARE hats on. Right at the moment, I figured an up and coming designer of color like himself would be a great addition to the Annual Fashion’s Conscience Show. As time progressed and April 21, 2012 got closer, I was amazed at Ike’s determination, eagerness, and excitement for finally showcasing his fashion talent. Issac Boakye is from the Bronx, NY but was born in Kumasi, Ghana. I call him “Michael Kors” because he is always thinking above and beyond the typical. Ike debuted his RARE NY Clothing Line for the first time at Syracuse University in the 12th Annual Fashion’s Conscience Night at the Museum themed Fashion Show.... |

Hillary Clinton's VisitBy April 29, 2012 - 9:11pm Hillary Clinton was in town for a talk this week, reuniting with the dean of Maxwell (aka her former top deputy) in Hendrick's Chapel. The line extended around the quad, but the wait was worth it! This plus Mayfest made for an awesome last full week of classes. READ MORE |

But before you head out to enjoy Friday’s festivities, if you’re in the mood for some legitimate intellectual stimulation, consider heading over to Hendricks on Monday morning, to see Secretary of State Hillary Clinton speak. The Lucky OneBy April 22, 2012 - 11:08am Zac Efron’s chiseled abs, the beautiful blonde heroine, steamy shower make-out scene, steamy bedroom love scene… Efron’s chiseled abs… chiseled. abs… (okay, you get the point). Nicholas Sparks’ latest chick flick, The Lucky One, plants these images in front of movie-goers like myself and strings together a plot that pulls at our heart strings and causes adult female viewers to giggle like tweens at Efron’s ridiculously ripped body. But does Sparks’ new movie stir his viewers the way his ever popular The Notebook, of 2004, did? Personally, I think not. But, before you get too disappointed, I believe The Lucky One came nearest to The Notebook’s allure in Sparks’ recent string of novel-made-movies. READ MORE ... |

Mad Over Mad MenBy April 17, 2012 - 5:36pm After a seventeen-month hiatus, Mad Men returned three weeks ago and I, along with 3.54 million other viewers, could not have been happier. For those of you who have been living under a rock, Mad Men is the television phenomenon following the life of Don Draper and his colleagues in the world of 1960’s advertising. While I do not claim to have the credentials of a well-known television critic, I do have the wherewithal and analytical skills (shout out to all my Television/Radio/Film major bffls) to see that Mad Men is a smart show. It is smart because it explores subjects universally relevant in a retro era. READ MORE |
