Hurricane Sandy strikesBy November 13, 2012 - 5:00pm On October 22, 2012, the U.S. was hit with pounding rain and heavy winds, as Hurricane Sandy made her way through the region. Luckily, the Syracuse area did not get slammed as expected, and it definitely fared better than friends down south in New York and New Jersey. Students received an emailed announcing that all classes Monday after 1:40 p.m. through Tuesday were cancelled. Just like the entire U.S., Syracuse prepared for the worst. Tops, the local supermarket, was full of students and residents buying supplies for the hurricane, going into survival mode. Hurricane Sandy changed its course and reached farther south and west, sparing SU from the rain and high winds predicted by the National Weather Service, classes resumed on October 31.... |

‘The Walking Dead’ Takes Over TVBy October 28, 2012 - 1:00am This summer I plopped myself down in front of the television and watched a full marathon of AMC’s drama, The Walking Dead. Forty-eight hours later, I had watched every episode of seasons 1 and 2, and I was hooked. If you haven’t heard of the show, you’re probably living under a rock. But if you’re certain that you’re not living under a rock, here’s what you have to know about one of the most-watched television series. READ MORE |

With Cantor Out, Who's In?By October 27, 2012 - 3:40pm In skimming the very dense and verbose email received last Friday from Chancellor Nancy Cantor, some Syracuse students missed the overall gist of the message. Somewhere in the second paragraph, Cantor announced that after ten years of service as Chancellor of Syracuse University, she plans to step down from the position when her contract ends in June 2014. Apparently the news was not too shocking to administrators and faculty who predicted Cantor’s exit after the $1 billion fundraising goal was reached. While some reacted to the news positively there have been some unfailing Chancy Nancy loyalists lauding a job well done. Thoughts about Cantor aside, all those connected with the school are eagerly throwing names into the ring as possible replacements.... |

Race Against the Clock: Election 2012By October 17, 2012 - 10:00am Weeks before the presidential election, combative politicos will not stop pointing their fingers at each other. As tensions soar and tempers flare (how dare they preempt Modern Family for a debate), I for one will be excited once the ballots have been processed. The upcoming election is the first in which many people my age will have the opportunity to vote for a new president. No American should take this privelege for granted, and it is humbling to finally be in an age bracket that affords me this right. With my birthday in February, I missed the eligibility to vote in the 2008 Presidential election by a mere four months (shout out to my friend Hillary who frustratingly missed it by four days).... |

Carmelo Anthony to Leade Knicks to VictoryBy October 15, 2012 - 8:00pm Carmelo Anthony returns to his alma mater with the New York Knicks Oct. 22 to face the Philadelphia 76ers in the Carrier Dome. The Knicks played its first game of the season Thursday Oct. 11, against the Washington Wizards at the Verizon Center. Winning 108-101, the Knicks had a solid offensive performance from forward, Steve Novak. While it’s a bit early for analysis, the 48 minutes of play revealed some flaws the Knicks left with after losing to the Miami Heat in the playoffs (4-1). Head coach Mike Woodson is still toying with player compatibility with the absence of Jeremy Lin. Lin did not play in the playoffs and was traded to the Houston Rockets in the 2012 offseason.
