It’s the time of year where we are getting ready for summer and warm weather. You might be thinking about the beach and tanning, but there is one thing that everyone forgets about. SUNBURN! Here are 5 tips to help you avoid and heal sunburn.

1. Wear Sunscreen

Yes that white stuff that you rub into your skin. I know it sometimes makes sand stick to you, but I think you would rather be safe than sorry. I recommend SPF 50 just to be safe especially for people with red hair like me. I feel the pain of the fact that you burn so easily. Please take this advice from a girl that has gotten sunburn so many times and wear your sunscreen!

2. Wear sunglasses

You could put on a hat too but sunglasses are really helpful especially if you have blue or green eyes. The sunlight is actually bad for your eyes, so make sure you protect them before you wreck them. I don’t always wear sunglasses even though I know I should. If you wear glasses full time I highly recommend that you get prescription sunglasses too.

3. Wear clothing that covers spots that normally burn

Wear a long sleeve on the beach. I know it sounds crazy but if you burn easily this trick will really help you make sure that your back and shoulders don’t burn. Yes, you could just wear a t-shirt or if you like going in the water but you want to keep your upper body covered I highly suggest getting a shirt at a sporting goods store that you can wear in the water. The kind of shirt that a surfer would wear.

4. Aloe is a must

If you do get sunburn a great way to take the pain out of it is to use aloe. My mom taught me this when I was young and I have used aloe every time I got have gotten sunburn. It really helps and if the sunburn is in a hard to reach spot ask someone else to help you put it on.

5. Find ways to stay out of the sun

I know this does not sound fun, but if you get too much sunburn, it could lead to skin cancer. If you are on the beach, bring an umbrella so that you are somewhat shaded from the sun

Taking care of yourself is so important, so make sure to follow these tips to keep yourself safe, but have fun in the sun. Sunscreen is your best bet but you need to keep reapplying it this summer!
