Your Bigger Sister: 5 Fashion Resolutions Plus Size Girls Should Make in 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Suffolk chapter.
  1. Get some stylish gym clothes

For many, every New Year begins with the resolution to get healthy and hit the gym, so for this reason, my first style resolution is related to this. My motto is “Life is a red carpet,” so you should always look good no matter where you are, sweaty gym included. Nowadays, there are a lot of options for us bigger girls to get some stylish active wear. Cult of California, for example, has some amazing plus size active wear if you are looking for inspiration. Plus, when you look good you feel good, so you will be even more motivated to keep doing what you are doing at the gym. And who knows, you might catch the eye of that cute guy on the treadmill.

2. Invest in some great shape wear and a proper fitting bra

Just as everything begins with a proper foundation, and so should your outfits. Shape wear is a necessity in any girl’s closet, especially plus size girls. Not only will it help smooth your silhouette, but it will help keep everything in place. No matter what exactly it is that you want to tame, there is shape wear designed specifically for that, and you can find them at various price levels. But it doesn’t stop there, “the girls” have to look good too! Nothing ruins a stylish outfit than something that’s not exactly where it should be. I know finding the right bra can be harder for those who were more gifted than others, but places like Lane Bryant and Avenue carry amazing bras up to unbelievable sizes, and they offer bra fittings too!

3. If you can’t find it, learn to DIY it!

One thing that I’ve learned from being a plus size girl is that you won’t always find what you are looking for. It might be too small, not in the color you want or not the pattern you were looking for. There are a lot of blogs out there on fashion DIYs and the such, so to avoid constantly getting frustrated this year, resolve to learn how to do-it-yourself. It will save you a lot of heartache, I promise.

4. Take more fashion risks.

Gone are the days when plus size girls were restricted to wearing all black and unflattering clothes. With the variety of stores catering to the plus size female, there is no excuse to be stuck in a fashion rut. This year, go all out and experiment with your look. Prints and patterns, statement jewelry, crop tops and neon colors are all in this season, and not just for straight size girls. Do something different; get out of your fashion comfort zone this year… Heck, cut your hair even! You never know what will look good until you try.

5. Feel good in the clothes you are in.

If you take away only one thing from this article, I want it to be that you should always remember that you are beautiful and you should feel that way every day. No matter what you decide to wear, always be comfortable and always feel great. You are gorgeous and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!
