8 Holiday Traditions to Make the Season Bright

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stony Brook chapter.

The holidays are the most wonderful time of the year. To make them feel special, participate in these activities with your loved ones and make them yearly traditions!

1. Bake cookies.

Find a childhood recipe you love and make it from scratch, or buy Pillsbury Ready to Bake themed cookies if baking’s not your strong suit. Enjoy them with hot chocolate!

2. Donate goods and volunteer your time.

It is the season of giving. Help others by donating to a local coat drive, a food pantry, or a charity organization. Give back to your community by volunteering at a soup kitchen, children’s hospital, veteran’s holiday event, or anything else you can think of. This will bring Christmas cheer not only to those in need, but to you, too.

3. Listen to Christmas music.

A playlist or radio station with all of your favorite holiday tunes will put you in the spirit.

4. Spend a day decorating.

Hang up lights, cut out snowflakes, and put up a tree to make your space feel more festive.

5. Organize a Secret Santa with your friends.

Gather your group and pick names out of a hat. This way, gift-giving will be more exciting, will force you to think out-of-the-box, avoids the expectation of buying gifts for all your friends, and won’t break the bank if a reasonable price limit is set. Everyone wins!

6. Watch your favorite holiday movies!

Have a relaxing night in and watch a movie you love! Looking for a new one? Check out this guide here.

7. Attend a SantaCon near you.

Dress up as Santa. Parade around your city with all your friends. All day fun!

8. Host an ugly sweater party.

Ugly sweaters have only become increasingly popular. Bringing people together to share their love for these woven hilarities is one of the best ways to feel holiday joy. Begin your search for the perfect sweater online or at a department store. Hold a contest at the party for the ugliest sweater to ensure your guests come ready to party in the Christmas spirit.

There are plenty of options for holiday activities. The goal is to spend time with those you love and to give and cherish your time. Take these ideas and form them into your own traditions to make the season merry and bright!
