Thoughts on the Greatest Women in the Music Industry

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stonehill chapter.

This past week we were sucked into watching VH1’s 100 Greatest Women in Music. This five part series counted down the greatest female artists reaching all the way back to the 1990s.  We discovered new artists we had never heard of and yet, it brought our attention back to those we had forgotten, as well as highlighted our all time favorite artists.  The countdown started off with the Pussycat Dolls at 100 and hitting other known artists such as Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Destiny’s Child, and the Spice girls.  Here are the singers that claimed the top five; see if your guesses are right!

No surprise here that Adele earned her spot in the top five. It really is a no brainer that she was so close to the top with her amazingly beautiful voice and incredible home lyrics.

With her out of this world style and music, it makes sense where she landed in the countdown.  She has truly music changed the music industry with her talent.

It would have been criminal to leave Beyonce out of the top five.  She has had so many chart topping hits, and created the single ladies anthem.  Not only is she a legend in the music industry, but she is also a role model to anyone who listens to her.

As we were watching, we did not expect Mariah to be number two, but VH1 didn’t forget about her and did her justice. Her songs are catchy, and her voice speaks for itself.

Obviously, Madonna was at the top of this countdown.  She has been delivering number one hits since she arrived on the scene in 1983.  She is truly an icon in the music world.

Some of our favorites on the countdown brought back memories of our favorite childhood artists.  These included Mary J. Blige and Britney Spears, two of our all time favorites whose music we will never get sick of.  The countdown also reminded us of some the songs and artists who we had forgotten, such as Regina Spektor and her hit song Fidelity.  The list also reminded us of our favorite singers who have passed away including Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston.  We look forward to continuing to listen to these women and rekindling the love for those we had forgotten about.
