No Sibling Rivalry Here: Why Going to College with my Sibling was the Best Decision I Ever Made

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stonehill chapter.

When submitting my deposit to Stonehill my senior year of high school I didn’t have any idea what it would be like to attend the same college as my brother. As excited as I was to be a Skyhawk, I was nervous that I would still be seen as just “Sweeney’s little sister”. My first few weeks of freshman year I really relied on my brother to help me around campus, introduce me to his friends and let me know where to go and where to avoid on the weekends, and I actually enjoyed being “Sweeney’s little sister”. As the semester progressed and I started to make a group of friends of my own, I realized how amazing it was to be able to have my brother as a real friend. When it came time for my sister to decide where she would spend her next four years, both my brother and I were extremely happy to encourage her to attend Stonehill. In high school we rarely wanted anything to do with our siblings, and the age difference seemed to be much greater back then.  Once in college we soon found out that it was actually fun running into each other and looked forward to hanging out together on the weekends.

Having a sibling at Stonehill means you have twice the friends, twice the school spirit and twice the meal plan money to mooch off of when yours runs out. There is also something to be said about spending time with your sibling as adults, outside of your childhood home. You come to realize that even though you may not always get along, sharing your college years with them is worth all of the petty drama.

The trend of siblings attending the same college has been on the rise, and is particularity evident at Stonehill. It seems that the close-knit Stonehill community makes it easy to want to share the school with your family. Why wouldn’t you want to have it guaranteed that in 20 years you are reminiscing on your college years there is someone there to reminisce with you?

So, if your sibling is sending in their deposit today, make sure it’s to Stonehill!
