Single Girl Diaries: Raising the Bar, Not Lowering Your Standards

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stetson chapter.

Every Thursday night we make the long trek to the single girl’s playground; the bars. Maybe it’s fairer to think of these establishments as the African plains and we are the hungry lionesses waiting to pounce. The bars allow us as single girls to have wide selection of Stetson’s most eligible bachelors, but it can also be a recipe for disaster. Guys at the bar seldom travel alone however, they have their wingmen Jack Daniels and Jose Cuervo you should watch out for. Every girl needs to be aware of 3 types of guys they’ll encounter at the college bar scene and how best to approach them.

The Frat Boy.

Probably coming from pre-gaming for two hours before this, he’s trashed by the time he gets to the bar. He gets the superlative for “most likely to spill his beer on your outfit.” While during the day he may be the well-dressed, overly philanthropic hottie in your management class, past midnight he’s a completely different beast. Approach with caution if you think it’s time to make your move, it’s a long walk from the fraternities to back home.

The Socially Insecure.

Who knows why he’s at the bar but here he is. You’ve seen this guy maybe once or twice around campus but have never said more than two words to him, but now he thinks it’s time to make his move. It’s not. Chances are if he only has the guts to talk to you by the light of the moon then this guy’s got something else going on. If he is only social when alcohol’s involved, he won’t hold your interest sober during the day. Chat with this guy for a little bit but move on looking for bigger and better things.

Mr. Right….Now.

Mr. Right Now, he seems so great in the moment that you’re literally already trying on his last name and dropping hints that you’re available tomorrow night. While he might be fun to hang out with that night, this rarely actually evolves into anything. If you HAVE to meet a guy at the bar, he’s probably the best. Before you start picking out china together though, make plans to see each other in the daylight. Everything is clearer in the light of day, especially without your beer goggles. Know the difference between Mr. Right and Mr. Right Now.

Ladies, we’re single and we shouldn’t have to give that up for any run of the mill guy at the bar. While its fun to go out and see who’s available, don’t let yourself get caught in the bar dating scene. Any relationship based off of a mutual appreciation for alcohol is probably not going to last. Enjoy dating, go out and have fun! Don’t get caught up in trying to find a guy when you’re out at the bars, the great guys will find you.

Xoxo,

Single Girl
