Hashtags, and trending, and tweets, oh my!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stetson chapter.

A little white bird and that thing you thought was a pound sign have a lot more power than just providing us with an update from TSM or a daily dose of sarcasm and good humor from our favorite celebrity personalities. With social media prevailing more and more in our society, it only makes sense that a Twitter etiquette lesson be given. Twitter is arguable the leading social platform for businesses across the nation and the ways in which this form of social media can bring you success are obsolete. As an avid Tweeter myself, I would like to offer a few simple steps to make you, as a brand, successful in the Twitterworld.

1. One of the first things to do when thinking about Twitter is how you want to identify yourself. Are you using yourself as a platform to promote a specific event? Trying to catch the eye of a future employer? If you answered yes to one or even both of these questions, having multiple Twitter accounts would be highly beneficial for you. It is important that what you put out as a representation of yourself stay consistent always; you wouldn’t want your personal tweets to be in the mix with more formal tweets directed to a company or associated with an organization.

2.
Once an identity is established, start branding yourself. This can easily be done with the tools you already have right in front of you. Representing an organization? Utilize the open motto, copy and paste link to the orgs national website, or ask an open-ended question that requires a response from your audience. These small steps will allow your followers and other Tweeters to establish a connection and rapport with you as a brand since you are giving them outside sources to interact with.

3. The last and most important part today’s Twitter lesson is to be interactive. Follow accounts that are similar to the goal or interests that you have. Retweet information, quotations, statistics, or saying that reflect your Twitter account’s ideals, and keep on the up and up on what is trending daily; these can do nothing but strengthen your social media relations.

All the best in the Twitterworld!
