Jeff Gerson ’12

By Allison Otis
October 25, 2011 - 1:19pm

It was only fitting to conduct our interview with Jeff Gerson ’12 via Skype.  A technology and social media whiz, this 21-year old defies traditional Stanford labeling of “techie” or “fuzzy.”  English major and Facebook intern?  That’s Jeff.

First, tell us a little bit about yourself.

After sharing the idea for its inception in 2009, news of the documentary Miss Representation appeared in countless newspapers, magazines, websites, morning shows, and broadcasts across the country. The film made a splash at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival (and numerous other national festivals) and has since begun a dedicated social movement among women from all backgrounds—and it’s easy to see why. David Liu '14

By Halle Edwards
May 21, 2011 - 8:00pm

Many students come to Stanford hoping to score a coveted internship or job with key tech companies like Facebook, Google or Microsoft. But that’s not a problem for David Liu ’14. Last summer, before starting his freshmen year at Stanford, Liu scored an internship at Facebook and revamped the notification system to keep users from being flooded with several notifications for each separate wall post. Morgan Duffy '13

May 14, 2011 - 12:44am

You’ve probably seen her YouTube vid, seen her signs littered around campus or gotten a billion e-mails from her about Dance Marathon: Morgan Duffy ‘13 is Stanford’s newest junior class president BAMF. Morgan, one of the members of Leland Stanford Juniors, is excited to bring her own flair to THIR-TEEN’s (we see you, Dean Julie) junior year. An active member of her high school’s student government, running for junior class president (along with Shilpa Apte, Alex Walker, Christine Kim, Beckie Yanovsky and Joel Aguero) was always in the cards. Cheryl Miyake ‘13

May 7, 2011 - 7:44pm

If you’ve ever been to Party City (I see you big/little week decorations) you’ve probably contemplated buying a seventeen dollar inflatable palm tree — the one with the small kiddie pool at the base to hold… “water.” For many of us born and bred on the mainland, that’s as close to a “real” Lu’au as we’ll ever get. But wait, do you smell that? Is that… Kahlua pig? And Lomi salmon? That’s right, the prep work for Stanford’s very own Lu’au has begun! The island flavor is coming this Saturday, May 14th; sitting down with Cheryl Miyake, Stanford’s little ray of sunshine, you can already begin to feel the Aloha spirit. READ MORE

Ernestine Fu '13

By Maria Bowe
April 28, 2011 - 3:14pm

It’s a rare Wednesday afternoon that Ernestine Fu can fit an interview into her schedule. The 19-year-old from North Hollywood is more likely found working in the ASSU offices as the Executive Director of Student Services Division, or writing passages for a book she is co-authoring with Former Dean of Stanford Law School Dr. Tom Ehrlich. She might also be busy doing research for the paper she is publishing on global construction capacity and the effect of global climate change on coastal infrastructure with Stanford CIFE Director Martin Fischer and Disney’s Chief Scientist Ben Schwegler or in pitch meetings at venture capital firm Alsop Louie Partners where she works part-time.

Alex Buscaglia ’11

April 23, 2011 - 2:51pm

Fifteen minutes before our interview Alex Buscaglia ’11 emails me to let me know that he’ll be a little late, but he still arrives at the CoHo before I do. When asked for his time management secret — he balances a 20 hour/week sport with a biomechanical engineering major — he demurs, but it’s clear his casual charm must belie some serious intensity. Alex and his teammates won the NCAA gymnastics championship last Sunday, Stanford’s 100th title but also stand-alone a spectacular accomplishment, topped off by Alex’s individual title on high bar and an All-American on parallel bars, yet he reports spending Monday morning geeking out over developments in prosthetic limb technology. He raves about his courses this quarter....

Anyone who’s ever been involved in an entrepreneurial endeavor knows that having a solid business idea isn’t enough to get it off the ground—you also need commitment.  Fortunately, Julienne Lam ‘13, Sam Purtill ‘13 and Gordon Dean'13 have got plenty of commitment, and they are clearly willing to invest it in their project.
