Relay for Life of Northfield!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

It feels like the end of the semester is filled with so many events happening on campus, especially next weekend: INBLACK, Prez Ball, and… Relay for Life!

Relay for Life is a fundraising event that raises money for cancer research as part of the American Cancer Society.

Fundraising

People form teams and work together to meet fundraising goals, both indiviudally and as a team. You can register online for a team here. It can be really easy to fundraise online. You can send emails to family/friends, share the link to facebook, etc. Then, people can donate on this site to you specifically or to your team. Fundraising can take place at the event as well. Teams may sell homeade items, such as bracelets, or have games and food. All of this money goes to the American Cancer Society!

Luminaria Bags

Something very important to this event and to fundraising is called Luminaria Bags. People can purchase a bag for $10 each. They can then decorate the bag “In Honor of” or “In Memory of” someone who has battled cancer.

Then, later in the evening, there is a “Luminaria Ceremony” where a candle is placed in each bag and they line the track or area where the event is being held. The ceremony is a time to reflect and honor all cancer survivors. This is a picture of the luminaria ceremony from our Relay event in my hometown of Woodbury, Minnesota:

Survivorship

A main goal of this event is to honor cancer survivors. There will be survivor speakers who will share their story and strength. It is a really inspiring event that also takes steps toward one day finding a cure for cancer.

The Northfield Relay for Life will be held on Friday, April 22nd at Skoglund from 6pm – 12 am! You can come for as long as you want, but I encourage you all to stop by if you have time! You also don’t need to be on a team to come – you can still help by coming to support other survivors and by seeing what other teams have to offer!

Cancer is too prevelant in a lot of our lives, and this is the time to fight back!

xoxo,
