Ole Fit: Group Fitness

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Hey, Oles!

Have you ever wanted to go to a group fitness class but you’re unsure of which to try?  There are so many options! From step-class to Bikram to Zumba to kickboxing, how are you to know which class to attend?

This week, we’re going to talk about group fitness classes. Here are some helpful hints on choosing the best class for you:

Yoga:

The best known of the group fitness classes, yoga is a wonderful way to maintain mental and physical health. There are many versions of yoga classes, ranging from Vinyasa to Fitness yoga. Do your research before you pick your yoga class and don’t be afraid to try out new ones. Yoga is especially beneficial if you are a high-impact athlete because it loosens you up, works new muscles and ultimately, improves your performance.

Pilates:

Not to be confused with yoga, Pilates classes focus more on strength building and core work. Once again, there are many different types of Pilates classes, so do your research before you pick one. That being said, any Pilates class will work new muscles the entire time. I highly recommend Pilates for anyone who is looking to tone their body or build strength!

Zumba:

Ah, Zumba. Who doesn’t love to go jump around and dance with friends for an hour? The one thing about Zumba is that you have to overcome your inhibitions- you can’t be upset when you don’t get a move right or look dumb! Everyone does anyways, so who really cares? If you’re looking for a solid cardio workout, grab a buddy and go to a Zumba class. Then get ready to dance HARD- half-doing the moves won’t get you the workout you’re looking for.

Cycling:

This paragraph will probably be biased because I am a big fan of cycling classes. In my opinion, cycling is one of the best forms of cardio exercise out there. It’s low-impact and super fun (once again, peppy music and a talkative instructor make everything better). The best part about cycling is that you control how hard you’re working. The bike has adjustable resistance; although the instructor will suggest the level at which you should be working, ultimately, you control your level of output.

Boxing/Martial Arts:

It’s confession time, Oles. I’ve never been to a martial arts class. From what I’ve heard though, boxing and other forms of martial arts are a wonderful combination of cardio and strength building. Next time you’re looking to get a full-body workout, consider one of these classes (and then come tell me how it is)!

These are only five descriptions of the numerous options you have for group fitness classes. Next time you’re looking to mix up your workout, try one of these (or a different group fitness class)! They keep you entertained and healthy… which is ultimately what every collegiate wants.

Stay fit, Oles!
