Ole Entertainment: Summer Music Festival Preview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Hey Oles! With only two more months to go until school gets out, it’s time to start looking ahead and planning how to spend your time off the hill this summer. Maybe you’ve already secured a job or internship or were just planning to hang out with friends, but no matter what you’re doing, make sure to schedue some time for yourself and a few others to hit up a music festival nearby. Music festivals are a great way to let loose and have fun, all while hearing some incredible music in an amazing setting. Check out a few of the ones listed below and start searching for tickets now!

Coachella- April 11-13, 18-20

Indio, CA

Coachella, one of the most iconic music festivals in America, takes place over the two upcoming weekends. While most of us will probably still be here on the hill experiencing the daily grind of classes, homework and extracurriculars, those of you lucky enough to snag a ticket will be basking in the hot California sun listening to some of the biggest names in the music industry. This year’s headliners include OutKast, Muse, Arcade Fire, Beck, Lana Del Ray, Skrillex, Pharrell Williams and Lorde. Thankfully, performances will be available to stream live on Coachella’s YouTube channel, so you can watch the festival from the comfort of your own room.

Sasquatch! Festival- May 23-25

George, WA

Held at the scenic Gorge Amphitheatre above the Columbia River in Washington, Sasquatch! is known for providing its attendees with a wide range of music, from hip-hop and rap to EDM and indie rock. With such a remote location, most people camp in the designated fields nearby. This year’s headliners are Outkast, The National, MIA, Queens of the Stone Age, Foster The People, Kid Cudi and HAIM. Just imagine taking in the gorgeous scenery while listening to those names!

Electric Daisy Carnival- May 24-25 (NYC), June 20-22 (Las Vegas)

New York, NY and Las Vegas, NE

For those of you EDM junkies, Electric Daisy Carnival is right up your alley. Bonus: it’s happening twice, so just pick which date and place works best for you. The lineup has yet to be revealed for 2014, but based on last year’s headliners (Afrojack, Major Lazer, Calvin Harris, Knife Party, Armin Van Buuren, and Avicii) this summer will not disappoint. Electric Daisy Carnival is not for the faint of heart- with massive art installations spewing fire, carnival rides and insane special effects, it can seem a bit intimidating at first but ultimately add to the incredible experience.

Governor’s Ball- June 6-8

Randall’s Island, New York City

As a fairly new music festival (the first one was held in 2011), Governor’s Ball has certainly proved that it can run with the big dogs by snatching up some of the nation’s biggest acts and infusing it with a unique New York culture. Highlights from this year’s lineup include Outkast, Jack White, Skrillex, The Strokes, Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, J. Cole and Disclosure. Apart from the bustling music scene, festival goers can also test out some authentic New York cuisine at a variety of food trucks, play lawn games, take pictures in photo booths, and check out some art installations.

Bonnaroo- June 12-15

Manchester, TN

Noted as one of the most “hardcore” music festival America has to offer due to the big-name acts and camping experience in the Tennessee heat, Bonnaroo may have one of this year’s most coveted lineups. With headliners including Kanye West, Skrillex, Frank Ocean, Jack White, Elton John, Vampire Weekend, The Arctic Monkeys and The Flaming Lips amongst many more talented names, only a limited number of tickets are still available. A ticket also covers admission to the many activities on Bonnaroo grounds apart from music, like the Comedy and Cinema tents and the Silent Disco. Don’t worry though- like Coachella, Bonnaroo will be livestreaming performances on their YouTube channel.

Firefly Music Festival- June 19-22

Dover, DE

Another new music festival (its debut was in 2012), Firefly has received praise for bringing national acts to the East Coast. Set in the forest, attendees camp in tents or RVs, with the additional option of “glamping”. If you own a pair of TOMS shoes or have always wanted some, you’re in luck- Firefly has a stand where you can bring or buy a pair of TOMS have a designer paint a custom design on them. 2014 highlights include Foo Fighters, Outkast, Jack Johnson, Imagine Dragons, Pretty Lights, The Lumineers, Arctic Monkeys and Weezer.

Lollapalooza- Aug 1-3

Chicago, IL

Round out your summer with a visit to the Windy City for Lollapalooza, a festival known for bringing in both bands of international fame and virtual unknowns, serving as a launching pad for their careers. Located in Grant Park off the shore of Lake Michigan, festival goers often receive discounted access to various Chicago destinations in case they want to explore the city during their stay. This year’s headliners include Eminem, Outkast, Kings of Leon, Skrillex, Calvin Harris, Lorde and The Arctic Monkeys.
