It’s a new spin on what is known as one of the most tragic love stories of all time. “Gnomeo and Juliet,” a new animated movie based off William Shakespeare’s
Romeo and Juliet came out in theaters on February 11. As the title of the movie suggests, the movie’s basic story line follows Shakespeare’s tragedy only with red and blue gnomes representing the Montagues and Capulets. Hilarity, chaos, and love ensue as the gnomes fight to protect the gardens in which they live.Gnomeo, a blue gnome, and Juliet, a red gnome, have a chance encounter in the night when they both go after the “perfect flower” to add to their respective gardens. Sparks fly and soon the two star-crossed lovers, er, gnomes decide to continue to meet in secret in the “Lawrence Garden” (Shakespeare allusion, anyone? Romeo and Juliet meet at Friar Lawrence’s cell). Their relationship continues to develop, until tragedy strikes – each garden’s prize flowers are destroyed – and their loyalties to their families and each other are tested.
Full of familiar characters namely Tybalt and Benny (Benvolio), Shakespeare references like the moving truck’s company name is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (characters from Hamlet), and even a cameo appearance by the Bard himself are entertaining for the true Shakespearean fan. Even if you miss these little allusions, you will still be able to enjoy the fact that the gnomes sing John Elton songs while they are having lawn-mower races. The end of the movie is very different than the end of the tragedy. I do not want to spoil the end of the movie for those planning on seeing it, but a hint to keep in mind is that the movie is kid friendly!
Overall, it’s a story for all ages. Children, teenagers, parents, and grandparents will all enjoy this adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It’s a love story, but the comedy aspect and a great soundtrack provided by Elton John make this a perfect movie to welcome the new spring season. Whether you are an avid Shakespeare fan or you just like watching a cute romance story full of clever one-liners, you will love “Gnomeo and Juliet.”
