Humans of St. Olaf: Becca Carcaterra

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Year: 2018

Major: English with a Race and Ethnic Studies concentration

Favorite class you’ve taken this year:

I did an independent study in Historical Fiction Writing with a good friend of mine last semester, where we researched a period in history and then wrote short stories. I picked the immigrant communities of 1910’s New York, which connected to my heritage and was so much fun!

Favorite study spot:

Anywhere next to a window! Natural light plus distraction is ideal.

Favorite St. Olaf memory:

It didn’t take place on campus, but when I was in the hospital during my sophomore year SGA and Ole Spring Relief put together a huge package of goodies from a bunch of different orgs, and then signed a giant card for me and delivered it to my hospital room. It was the sweetest, most touching moment of community I’ve ever seen here.

Coffee or tea?

Iced chai 4ever

Favorite sound:

Moving water: ocean waves, little creeks, rain on roofs

Favorite book:

“The Kite Runner,” by Khaled Hosseini

If you were given a $20 Target gift card, what would you buy?

Brie cheese and a cheap paperback.

Is there anything new that you still want to try while on the hill?

Take a class in Dittmann!

What is a community on campus that you feel proud to be apart of and why?

I am very proud to be part of the Manitou Messenger, the student newspaper on campus. We report on a variety of stories on campus and off, including News, Opinions, Sports, Arts and Entertainment, and Variety. We are always looking for new writers if you are interested in telling stories for at our community!

Plans for after college:

Ummmm… haha I’d love to be abroad in some form, either WOOFing, doing some kind of service project, or working for a nonprofit. But who really knows, I’m keeping all of my options open!
