Five Ways to Avoid Looking Like a Freshman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Hey Oles!

Starting my first year of college here at St. Olaf I had one major concern: I did not want to be an obvious freshman. It’s quite obvious to tell us freshman apart, especially at such a small school, but there are several things that just scream “wow that girl is a freshman.” After observing people the last couple of weeks, I have discovered what some of these obvious actions are, and have tried to come up with some ways to avoid them.

Checking your mailbox VERY often:

Getting mail is probably one of the most exciting parts of college; however, checking your mailbox every ten minutes tells everyone you are way too eager to receive mail, true freshman behavior.

Dropping your tray in the caf:

While dropping your tray during a meal can happen to anyone, it is hard for those of us that are new here, and meals can be a stressful time. I have seen mostly other fellow freshman be the biggest offenders of dropping trays as we aren’t yet used to the hectic experience that is eating a meal in Stav Hall.

Wearing your lanyard around your neck:

It is very convenient to wear your lanyard around your neck and a great way to keep track of your keys and Ole card; however, wearing it in this fashion is a little silly! It is much better to keep your lanyard in your pocket to avoid looking like an obvious Freshie!

Getting locked out of your dorm building:

At some point everyone is bound to get locked out of their room by leaving their Ole card somewhere, but I have watched it happen very frequently with many of the people in my dorm already. Remember to bring your Ole card with you so that you can get into the necessary buildings!

Wearing your 2014 Seniors shirt:

By wearing your senior year shirt with your class year on it, older students can clearly tell that you are a freshman! Avoid this!

I hope that these tips can help you with blending in with the older class years, and being a less obvious freshman student!
