10 Holiday Movies to Watch When Procrastinating

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

With Christmas Fest, Christmas Trees and snow on its way, I am totally ready to just relax and sip some hot chocolate in Fireside. But along with the Christmas Cheer also comes studying (or should I say cramming) for final exams, research papers and group projects. We are almost done! So, for those times when you need a study break, look no further than these 10 Christmas movies to help you relax, laugh and get into the holiday spirit.

1.) Elf

A 2003 Christmas classic, Elf is about a man named Buddy who was adopted by elves. After growing up in Santa’s Workshop, Buddy leaves the North Pole for New York City to find his birth father. And with cast members like Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel and Peter Dinklage, you know it’s going to be funny.

2.) White Christmas

Starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen, White Christmas is about two musical stars who team up with a sister act to help save an old country inn. It was released in 1954 and is a romantic musical comedy.

3.) Miracle on 34th Street

Released in 1947, Miracle on 34th Street is about an old man named Kris Kringle who fills in as Santa for Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day Parade. As his popularity soars, Kringle starts to claim that he is the real Santa Claus. But, his claims land him in court to determine his authenticity as Santa as well as his mental health.

4.) A Christmas Story

About a boy named Ralph Parker’s wish for a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle. I don’t want to give away the movie, but this movie is a great way to lighten some of that end-of-the-semester stress.

5.) Holiday Inn

Another older, but timeless holiday movie is Holiday Inn is about Jim and Lila, members of a performing trio run away to start their own inn. But, things are not always as simple as they seem. This movie is a romantic comedy featuring stars like Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Marjorie Reynolds and Virginia Dale.

6.) The Nightmare Before Christmas

Another timeless holiday movie, Disney’s Nightmare Before Christmas, is about a skeleton named Jack from Halloweentown who wants to take over Santa’s role in Christmastown. While it’s not your typical holiday romance, it does have its sweet moments and is a great movie to watch if you want a little more edge to your Christmas season.

7.) National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Staring Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo, this movie is about a man named Clark Griswold who wants his Christmas to be absolutely perfect. But, nothing goes as planned as family starts to show up unexpectedly. A 1989 farce/comedy, this movie will make you laugh and make you appreciate the family you have.

8.) Home Alone

When Kevin McCallister acts up the night before a family trip, his mother makes him sleep in the attic. But when she mistakenly leaves her son at home, Kevin is forced to defend the house and himself against two robbers.

9.) Deck the Halls

This is more of a personal favorite of mine. It is a holiday comedy about two men competing for the best Christmas decorations in the neighborhood. It’s cool to see some extremely decked out houses as well as see Danny DeVito and Matthew Broderick compete against each other. And if you can decorate your dorm like these men decorated their homes, please give me a room tour!

10.) It’s a Wonderful Life

The ultimate Christmas classic, this movie never fails to give me my holiday-fix. It’s a Wonderful Life is about a man named George Bailey who wishes he was never born. But when a guardian angel named Clarence steps in, George’s life view completely changes. It’s a long movie but it’s worth every minute.
