How to Organize your First Month of School

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Law U chapter.

As we enter into our second full week of classes, many of us may feel overwhelmed with the amount of work we anticipate for the semester. At a campus where a majority of the student body is involved in sports and/or many other extra-curricular activities, time management is a crucial skill to have yet very difficult for many students to obtain. We want to provide you with a list of resources around campus that will help alleviate any anxiety you may have about the upcoming semester!

1. Check out the SLU website! If you can’t possibly squeeze enough time into your schedule to go meet with faculty on campus, the SLU website is the perfect tool for you! You can find the academic advising page by simply scrolling over academics and clicking on the advising tab below. I find the academic advising resources to be the most helpful section; they provide documents to help you plan out your own schedules, understand academic policies, and more! http://www.stlawu.edu/advising/academic-advising-resources

2. Meet with your advisor! Schedule a meeting with your advisor in the beginning of the semester to go over your classes and course load. Most often than not, they are more than happy to help you out and always know what’s best for you in terms of fulfilling gen-ed requirements and major/minor requirements! Just keep in mind, you both live busy lives, especially them, so it’s important to plan ahead, take initiative and email them!

3. Meet one-on-one with the office! Individuals within this department specialize in helping students plan their academic schedule. Their job is to meet with you and help you manage your time, so don’t be afraid to make an appointment with them! Here is a list of their contact information, so that you can get a jump start on your planning: http://www.stlawu.edu/advising/employees

4. Take advantage of workshops! If you feel more comfortable taking a workshop with the academic advising office rather than meeting with them one on one, attend one of their workshops in the beginning of the semester! They will help you plan a day-to-day, manageable schedule for you, so that you can stop stressing and start living. Time management workshops: Tuesday September 6 and Thursday September 8 at 4:00pm (Whitman Annex Computer Lab 19)….For FY Student-Athletes: Monday September 12 and Wednesday September 14 at 8:00pm (Brown 122)

5. Academic Disabilities: St. Lawrence is very accommodating and helpful when it comes to academic disabilities. When in doubt, meet with Matt McCluskey. Not only will he give you great advice, but he will make your day even better than it was before.

6. Peer tutors: We are surrounded by geniuses around campus and chances are some of your friends or neighbours can help you with any subject you’re struggling with! Academic departments higher students who have excelled in varying subjects to become peer tutors. Check out this website and schedule a time where you can meet with a peer tutor! http://www.stlawu.edu/advising/peer-tutoring
