I’ve always had a love hate relationship with running. On one hand, it relaxes me, it makes me feel strong, and it is an amazing workout. But on the other hand, running can be long, hard, and miserable. It wasn’t until pre-season this fall, with daily runs, that I finally figured out how to make the most of my runs and enjoy them.

Here’s what I learned:

Go With Friends

Running with a friend can be the difference between finishing a strong 5 mile loop versus running for twenty minutes and walking the rest. Being alongside another person, especially one who is a little faster, pushes you to keep running and maintain a faster pace. Plus it is a great opportunity to chat with a friend!

Start Slow

If you are just getting into running, don’t get ahead of yourself; start with shorter runs and don’t be afraid of walking. You can work your way up to the distances you want to accomplish by setting small goals that will motivate you to keep working towards your final distance.  Doing this will make you feel accomplished and inspired along the way!

Find the Right Trails

If running on a treadmill seems daunting, take it outside! SLU has great trails with a variety of distances. My favorite is connecting the Kipp and Saddlemire trails, because the scenery is pretty in the woods and the rolling fields. Plus, ending by the horse barn is a treat! However, if you’re looking for a shorter run there are two loops around the football/soccer fields. Another option is running around campus or through town to make your own loop. If you find an outdoor route that you enjoy, your runs will be less boring and much more satisfying.

The Perfect Playlist

If you prefer to run alone, or prefer not to talk whilst running, then you need a killer playlist to power you through your workout. Before taking off on your run, put together your favorite songs that make you feel motivated and powerful. Something with a good beat is best, because it will help you run faster! If you don’t want to listen to music, you can also try listening to a good podcast when you run. This fall, my favorite running podcast was called “Serial” which is worth checking out.

Wear Cute Running Clothes

This is an easy one, if you feel comfortable and confident in your running clothes, you will enjoy the process so much more. The Brewer Bookstore has lots of shirts, shorts and other athletic gear to get you started, or you could order super cute workout apparel from Lululemon, Fabletics, or your other favorite brand!

Reward Yourself

Running is hard work, and you should reward yourself for the strenuous effort. Although you shouldn’t use running as an excuse to eat a ton of unhealthy food, recognize that you are putting in a lot of time and effort. It could be your favorite coffee drink or an ice cream after dinner, or just a relaxing trip to the sauna. Whatever it is pick something that will make you happy, and celebrate the fact that you are now a runner!
