How Career Services Can Help You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Law U chapter.

Career Services…maybe you’ve heard of them, maybe you’ve been, or maybe you go all the time– but what exactly does St. Lawrence’s Career Services provide for students? Located in the student center, there is no reason not to swing by and get a head start on preparing for the future… they do everything from taking a photo of you for LinkedIn to helping you step by step to find a job. Check them out by logging into https://stlawu.join handshake.com. You can make appointments under the heading “Career Center” — don’t miss out on such a great resource!

  1. Document Reviews: Schedule an appointment with career services to get a developed draft of resumes, cover letters, and professional documents looked over and edited. These appointments are one-on-one, and you will be paired with an educated professional who can help you prepare and format your documents to look professional.

  2. Career/Major exploration: If you are unsure of what career you want in the future, you can go to career services and they will help you narrow down your options! Here, they will ask for your interests, personality traits, etc., and then match you to possible careers that will work well with your traits. This feature is extremely helpful and reassuring for those who might not be super confident in their career options.

  3. Career Fair preparation: Get advice and prepare for any sort of career-related event here! They will address every one of your concerns.

  4. Graduate and Professional School: If you plan on continuing your education after undergraduate, Career Services can prepare you for it by helping you apply and preparing you for the tests needed to get into schools and find the right fit for you!

  5. Internships: If you are actively searching for an internship, or are hoping to get one in the future, Career Services can tell you exactly how to go about the application process, and even connect you to alumni who have opportunities available. This is a valuable resource and taking advantage of the amazing alumni network St. Lawrence has to offer is encouraged.

  6. Interview skills: Master your interview skills by going over key tips and tricks, and learn some of the best techniques to nail any interview, as well to cater what you say toward the specific interview you’re in.

  7. Job search: Similar to the internship search, they will tell you where to begin and help you along the way of finding a job. Once again, the alumni system is very helpful in this process.

  8. Networking: St. Lawrence is known for our amazing alumni system…but where does a student begin? Career Services is the place to go!

  9. LinkedIn photos: If you need a professional photo taken, Career Services has a full backdrop and high quality camera to help you out–and it’s free!

  10. And more! The list of things Career Services does is endless, but these are just a few of the most popular reasons students take advantage of it! Don’t hesitate to make an appointment!

Hi everyone! I'm Kristen! I am a Performance and Communications arts and Psychology double major, and plan to one day hold a career in the public relations field. On campus, some of my favorite things to do are get chai lattes at the bookstore, run the nearby trails, head into town for some kombucha, or hang out at my sorority house with my friends!
