A Guide To SLU Family Weekend 2017

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Law U chapter.

Where to Eat: (check out our recent article on Best Places to Eat Around Canton for more in-depth reviews: http://www.hercampus.com/school/st-law-u/best-places-eat-and-around-canton)

Instead of dinner, try going to brunch! Some great options in Canton and nearby Potsdam include the Best Western University Inn, Foxy Roxy’s, Village Diner, and the Diner at Cascade Inn. Also, don’t forget about The Bagelry, which is located right downtown!

There are a few places in Canton that you can try out for an early dinner: The Club, Sergi’s, Josie’s Pizzeria, Little Italy, 1844 House (usually pretty booked on busy weekends) Best Western University Inn, and Buster’s Sports Café.

If you are looking to get out of Canton, there are also some good places to try in Potsdam: Cactus Mexican Cantina, Maxfield’s, Between the Buns, Eben’s Hearth, and Mamma Lucia’s, just to name a few.

What To Know:

For those of you who have a parent (or parents) who went to St. Lawrence, which many of you have, here are some things to expect for this weekend:

  1. Stories and nostalgia

At some point this weekend, your parents are bound to let you in on some of the crazy stories they have from their time here at SLU; they will tell you some INSANE stories about what used to go down here on campus.. They will probably tell you all about the shenanigans they pulled at the Ticker, or what they did to get around the rules when the residence halls were still single-gendered. Some of these stories may be a little TMI and embarrassing to hear, but they are hilarious nonetheless.

   2.  Expect them to know a lot of other parents!

Your parent will recognize so many people during the weekend because there are so many legacies and generations of families who go here. There will be many reunions with people they haven’t seen in years, and they will point out their old fraternity brother, sorority sister, girlfriend, boyfriend, hall mate, etc. There will definitely be a lot of catching up to do and a lot of reminiscing about their years at SLU, so let them do so! This will also serve as a reminder to you to appreciate the time that you have left here, as it tends to go by pretty fast.

   3. Expect that they will probably go harder than you.

Your parent will be the first one at the Hoot Owl and the last one to leave. Just accept it; they wish they were back at SLU with all their friends. Let them enjoy the place they love just as much as you do! This is also great bonding time with your parents so take advantage of it while they are here.

   4. Expect to bond over SLU.

Before you know it you and your parent(s) will be swapping stories back and forth about your time here at SLU, and the similarities and differences between your various experiences. Take some time this weekend to create some new memories on campus that you can share with them.
