5 Tips to Make Way for a Great Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Law U chapter.

Coming back for a new semester is always a super exciting time; over break you look forward to reuniting with friends, “syllabus week,” new classes, and more. Here are a few ways to make sure that you’re making the best of your spring semester at SLU!

  • Make sure to not fall behind with your class work too early! Not only is it going to keep you from becoming overwhelmed later on, but it will also help you make a good first impression with all of your professors. Read (and re-read) all of your syllabi for each class, make sure to rent or purchase all of your books, and make sure you’re getting all your first assignments in on time.

  • Try to take advantage of the winter! There are several ski mountains, hiking spots, and ice skating rinks all around the North Country. When living in a place with an undeniably long winter, you should make the best of the sub zero temperatures by using it to your advantage!

  • Have some fun girls nights! You don’t need to go out on the town every night during the weekend; if you and your girlfriends aren’t feeling it, spend a night in! Pour yourselves a glass of wine, pop some popcorn, and throw on a fan favorite rom-com, scary movie, or catch up on the latest Grey’s Anatomy or Bachelor episodes. Check out our article “Seven Steps to An Amazing Girls’ Night” for a few ideas!

  • Treat yourself & go out with friends. If you and a few of your gal pals realize you all have one night with little work and no other important obligations, go out to dinner together! There are a few cozy places to sit down and eat around Canton and Potsdam (Jake’s on the Water, The Club, Maxfield’s, 1844 House, etc…), so get off campus for a night and go have an amazing meal!

  • Stay busy on campus! Sometimes it’s easy to fall into a slump during the year, especially with the lengthy winter, so try to get involved on campus. There are plenty of club and intramural sports, volunteer programs, social and networking events, and more. It’s SUPER easy to get involved in at least a couple of things, so try to make sure you have one thing to do every day other than class!
