This Week We Love: Eurovision

Euro pop Beats. Bawling Ballads. Bizarre Costumes….  These are just some of the delights that inevitably occur at the ‘mad melting pot’ of the Eurovision song contest. This year the festival takes place tonight in Copenhagen, Denmark after its victory in 2013 with singer Emmelie de Forest and the memorable ballad (or not) ‘Only Teardrops’ last year in Malmö, Sweden.

Remarkably, this year the UK seems to have entered a competitor who actually seems to have achieved some popularity. Molly Smitten-Downes is flying the flag for the U.K. in 2014 with her self-written single, which is cheesyly entitled ‘Children of the Universe.’ However, any improvement from last year’s attempt, with Bonnie Tyler and the U.K. gaining a spectacular 23 points would be a success. And who can forget our 2007 entry, the surprisingly catchy ‘Flying the Flag for You’ by Scrooch. In any case, bookies have apparently placed the UK within the top five. How did that happen? Anyway, Good Luck Molly!

Another country tipped for victory is Ukraine, who, according to Dr Eurovision (wrote a PhD based on Eurovision?!) ‘could pick up some sympathy votes’ due to the tense political situation in the country. Russia, with their single ‘Shine’ which is performed by the 17 year old Tolmachevy sisters has already been booed in the Semi-final.

Some of the highlights will inevitably include Graham Norton’s witty commentary, realising the existence of previously unheard of European countries and of course Austria’s entry: Conchita Wurst a.k.a. ‘the bearded lady.’

Coverage begins at 8 pm tonight on BBC One.
