Spotlight on STAR at St Andrews Radio, with Imogen Thom

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Andrews chapter.

As the clock strikes three on a Wednesday afternoon, most St Andrews students are either out on the sports pitch, or studying away for a looming deadline. To accompany them on their treadmill runs, or complement their study skills and distract them from typing Facebook into Google search, is the voice and song choices of the one and only Imogen Thom on STAR, St Andrews’ radio.

Imogen Thom is a first year theology student, and although this is Imogen’s first experience of radio broadcasting she appears to be a natural. Although her show is titled ‘New Music’, Imogen insists that it is a mix of new up and coming artist with some old classics. When asked to describe her playlist, Imogen told me that it is ‘not exactly your usual spotify collection’, suggesting that her show offers something original to the listener.

Imogen on paper hosts the show on her own, yet normally she is accompanied by a special guest, bringing antidotes from their week at St Andrews or a few of their own favourite songs. Having just returned from a weekend home in her native London, Imogen bought back inspiration for this week’s show, music from The Staves, Matt Corby and her favourite band at the moment, The Lumineers.

With the St Andrews radio running from 12pm to 11pm, there are many other shows cooperating all different kinds of music, from the show ‘Jazz per usual’ played at ten on a Sunday night, to ‘Under the covers’ played at six on a Friday, there is a show to fit everyone’s musical taste. So, if you want an original playlist to enrich your day, I suggest everyone tunes in at three on Wednesday!
