President Trump’s Ties to Russia are Getting Even Stronger

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Andrews chapter.

This past week, it came to light that the new Attorney General Jeff Sessions had previously spoken with the Russia’s Ambassador to the US, not once but twice. What makes this situation even more heinous is that Sessions was asked during his confirmation whether or not he knew of any relations with Russia in regards to the Trump team. Not only did Sessions state that he was not aware of any wrong-doing, but even offered the information that he himself was not guilty of anything.

All the more laughable in light of recent events.

Sessions is guilty and should step down, meeting the same end as Michael Flynn, the former US national security advisor. Flynn left his post after after news broke out that he had also met with the Russian Ambassador, even though he had never disclosed this and instead sought to hide this information from the public. Furthermore, it was also revealed that Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and advisor, was also present at a meeting between Flynn and the Ambassador.

That’s at least three of the Trump team’s high level members with ties to Russia, with more names swiftly coming out of the woodwork, and people still do not believe that Trump is nothing more than a puppet at Putin’s disposal?

If Hillary Clinton had ever even dared to look at the Russian Ambassador, Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan would have been scrambling for a Congressional hearing before she could even blink.

It’s hypocrisy, through and through.

Even Trump himself has flip-flopped more times than we could count over whether Putin knew him, whether Putin and him had spoken, whether Putin was his friend, etc.

I don’t know what Republicans need to see the truth – a fruit basket in the Oval Office, signed “Love, your pal Vlad?” It’s sickening to watch, knowing that if the tables were turned and there were even a hint of impropriety from a Democratic president and their staff, Republicans would be on a witch-hunt.

If our elected officials will not hold these high ranking US officials in check, it is time for the US public to demand some answers. And God knows the Trump team has a lot of answering to do.
