Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Andrews chapter.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner should be starting in just a few hours, bringing together journalists and politicians to engage in some (mostly) light-hearted criticism and jests at each group. The host this year is the Daily Show’s Hasan Minhaj, who has proved himself to be a worthy host and fully capable of bringing a mix of humor and political commentary to the event.

Now, normally this night is one of witty jabs, with jokes made at the expense of everyone, including the President of the United States. This year is proving to be quite different from those past dinners for two main reasons. One, President Trump is skipping the dinner (thin skin, anyone?) in lieu of a “rally” where like-minded ultraconservative zealots will gather to inflate our leader’s wilting ego. And two, Samantha Bee is hosting her own event, the Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. I, for one, cannot wait.

Bee, known for her years working at The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and as the host of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, is vicious in the best way possible. And this ‘alternative’ dinner is just what we need – an event where true criticism can occur and where the humor can become as unfiltered as possible (see: any episode of her show). She’s bold and ruthless; no one is safe from her, and I cannot wait.

If you’re like me and absolutely need to partake in this event, it should be streaming live from Twitter beginning at 11 pm, EST (so 4 am in the UK). Or you could wait until it’s uploaded to YouTube like a sane person would, but to each their own :)

Anyway, be sure to tune in for the best scathing criticism of our current political system in recent history. Sam Bee, we’re ready for you.

I am an American medical student at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. I have been an avid writer for several years, focusing mainly on creative writing. But I hope to be more involved in our university's culture, particularly by bringing interesting information to all of our students!
