Bagles for Brunch

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Andrews chapter.

When the Great British Bake Off isn’t on TV (a tragic period in my life) – it provides the opportunity to re-enact this celebrated television show in your own kitchen. Particularly when the stress of exams hit – when you need to knead to work out any frustration (sorry). Plus you have yummy food at the end. I couldn’t recommend a more productive procrastination technique. For more inspiration, check out the blog, More Bread, Less Dough.

Bagels

If you are more adventurous… you could try out making bagels! Perfect for brunch – with smoked salmon, with a drizzle of lemon and a sprinkling of pepper, and I side of coffee and orange juice… #nomnomnom.

Ingredients:

–          7g dried yeast

–          4 tbsp sugar

–          2tsp salt

–          450g bread flour

Method:

1.       Put the yeast and 1 tablespoon of sure into a bowl and leave for 10 minutes until it begins to get frothy.

2.       Pour in 200ml of warm water into the bowl, and then add the salt and the flour. Mix until it forms a dough.

3.       Knead the dough for ten minutes – either by hand or in a food mixture.

4.       The next stage it to let it rise. Put the dough into a clean bowl, cover with cling film and leave in a warm place for around an hour, until the mixture doubles in size.

5.       Heat the oven to 220 degrees Celsius and boil a saucepan of water with the remaining teaspoons of sugar. Divide the mixture into balls of about 85g. Stick the reverse end of a wooden spoon into these balls to create a hole. Enlarge the hole, and then place in the boiling water for about a minute.

6.       Then place these onto a baking tray and cook for 25 minutes until you tap the bottom and it sounds hollow.

7.       Enjoy!
