Trends From New York Fashion Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Spelman chapter.

As an avid fashionista, New York Fashion Week has always seemed like heaven on earth to me. The idea of getting up close and personal to designer fashion before it hits the stores seemed like the ultimate dream come true. Unfortunately, I have never been able to attend any of these shows, due to my status as a broke college student. To keep up with the trends, I try to watch every free live stream I can and normally follow every fashion blog that will provide me with daily updates.

A couple of days ago, I found myself scrolling through a blog dedicated to NYFW (New York Fashion Week) to give myself a recap. I noticed the beautiful pieces from designers like DKNY and Mike Jacobs. I found myself heart-eyeing every single article of clothing I saw. Bright colors, vivid patterns, and well-tailored pieces flooded my web browser. From my research, I put together a list of the hottest trends seen on the runway.

Bright colors. As seen by the looks on the runway, the neutral monochromatic looks that were huge during spring and winter are on their way out of the door. Designers like Ralph Lauren and Adam Selman made sure to incorporate these trends into their pieces. Exotic prints and patches made their way onto the pieces as well, just to provide an extra pop. Bright reds, oranges and other warm clothes frequently appeared on the runway.

Cut out tops. NYFW (New York Fashion Week) proved that crop tops are definitely an old trend. The designers featured opted for shirts that were actually full length (what a shocker!) and decided to show more skin on the shoulders instead. Clothing lines Brandon Maxwell and Monse were two of my personal favorite pieces.

Sheer. See through tops and dresses were another huge trend on the runway this season. The designs ranged from modest to completely revealing. Designers definitely wanted to show lots of skin during this spring season. In fact, most of the women’s clothing from Yeezy Season 3 (fashion line by Kanye West) was completely sheer.

These were just a few of the many trends spotted on the runway this season. Although I love fashion, I was not a huge fan of most of the trends. With this being said, I definitely enjoyed looking at all of the new clothes and virtually attending these fashion week events online. It is always a good thing to get a little style inspiration, even if it is a little out of your traditional comfort zone when it comes to fashion!
