By day, Trey Flake is your ordinary college junior.  He’s a marketing major, loves Carolina football, and is active in his fraternity Phi Kappa Sigma. By night, Trey transforms into a whole different person: DJ Stellis. This week, Her Campus South Carolina interviewed this rising star about his passion, as well as all things music.

When we asked Stellis what drove him to be a DJ, his answer was immediately “My love for music!” But how did listening turn into creating? As it turns out, Trey got into DJ-ing through one of his best friends, DJ Sated, who taught him the ropes of mixing music.  Once Trey bought his own mixing board, he was hooked.

As far as stage names go, Trey’s is definitely one of the more unique ones out there (we’re looking at you DJ Snake…real creative).  How did Trey come up with “Stellis?” “It’s the Latin translation for ‘stars.’  It’s actually a part of my Fraternity’s motto, ‘Stellis Aeuquus Durando’ which translates in English to ‘Equal to the Stars in Endurance.’  I like the meaning of that quotation and the way it sounded, so I chose Stellis as my name,” he said.

Stellis started DJ-ing at house parties and pre-games, but he has quickly advanced to bigger and better things. “My first real gig was at Pour House about a month ago,” said Trey.  “All my friends came out to support me so there was a huge crowd and a line to get in! It was an awesome feeling to play my mixes for that many people, and it got really ratchet really fast!”  Well that sounds like some good clean fun!

Trey has also performed for philanthropy events and Greek mixers, but his favorite place to work will always be good ole five points on the weekends, where it’s always bound to get crazy: “Last weekend I was playing with DJ Sated and things got rowdy.  Someone actually starting crowd surfing at the bar! That was insane, I still can’t believe that happened!”

Trey’s favorite genre of music to play is trap, but when he’s downtown he is typically at the mercy of the public: “The most requested song I get would probably be 23 [by Mike WiLL Made It] with Miley Cyrus…I don’t always play it though,” he chuckles.  Sweet niblets, Stellis! Why would you deprive us of our Miley?
