What are qualities that a “top tier” house girl should have? The simple answer: it varies. And guess what? It should! I love my sorority because it is so diverse – we aren’t the cookie cutter sorority, and we take pride in that. The problem with the whole tier thing is that everyone gets caught up in who’s the best or the prettiest or the most popular, that the real reason girls even join sororities becomes clouded.
Here’s the problem with grouping sorority houses into tiers. You see, often times when whoever it is decides they have the power to group girls into the best, decent, and awful categories, they fail to remember many important and unique aspects of what actually defines a sorority.
What kinds of girls would you expect to make up the “top tier” sororities? Are they the pretty girls? Skinny girls? The ones with the athletes as their function dates? The wild, out every night girls? The ones that have unlimited credit cards and shopping days?
OR…
Are they the nice girls? Laid back? Intelligent? Creative? Hard-working? Philanthropic? The ones with genuine sisterhood and care for one another?
What so many people do not realize is that sororities are so much more than parties, functions, and an occasional philanthropy event here and there. We are more than a tier that can label or define us as good or bad. Sororities are about creating a sisterhood with girls that you share something in common with: ritual. Sororities are about encouraging and empowering women to realize their full potential. They’re a built-in support system, a way of creating a family/home away from home. They are full of so many events, triumphs, obstacles, friends, meals, and memories that we will keep with us forever. THAT is what matters. We need to stop judging each other within the Greek community and look at the strengths that each sorority holds and help them with their own weaknesses as well. Many people will quote the phrase “No matter the letter, we’re all Greek together”; between me and you, I think we should start living like it too.
