The Most Unforgettable Moments of the Oscars

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

With the Oscars comes the end of yet another amazing awards season, but it certainly ended the time with a bang! One of the most anticipated ceremonies, the Academy Awards, took place on Sunday, and don’t lie—we know you put off studying for that Econ midterm to see who was wearing what and tweet about all your favorite celebrities. However, in the off chance that you missed what all the fuss has been about since the event, here are highlights of some of the most unforgettable moments of the night.

Jennifer Lawrence trips…again

No one can forget J-Law’s infamous fall up the stairs on the way to accept her award last year? This year, she decided to mix it up by tripping over a traffic cone on the way out of her car. Her candid clumsiness is precisely why we love her though. She makes us believe that celebrities are real people too. We’ve all had embarrassing falls in front of a crowd of people—luckily ours wasn’t on national television!

John Travolta mispronounces Idina Menzel’s name

He had one job…literally! When John Travolta introduced Idina Menzel to perform her hit “Let It Go” from the movie Frozen, he mistakenly pronounced her name “Adela Nazim”. Despite his embarrassing mistake, Menzel had no hard feelings and Travolta jokingly said, “I’ve been beating myself up all day. Then I thought…what would Idina Menzel say? She’d say, ‘Let it go, let it go!’”

An impromptu pizza party

With Ellen hosting this year, it’s basically implied that some sort of shenanigans would be going on. In the middle of the ceremony, she decided to provide dinner and a show by ordering pizza for the audience. The deliveryman, Edgar Martirosyan, had no clue he would be delivering to the Academy Awards. Ellen gave him a $1000 tip and Martirosyan said that “this is really the American dream”.

Ellen’s record-breaking selfie

I hate to break it to all you “selfie-olympic” hopefuls but Ellen has for sure won the gold with this one. She had Bradley Cooper take a selfie of her and many other stars, including Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, and Brad Pitt. With 2.6 million retweets, the picture broke the record for most retweets ever, and temporarily shut down Twitter.

Leo Dicaprio didn’t win best actor

Despite his many memorable roles, such as Jack Dawson in Titanic and Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby, Leo has never won an Oscar. We all hoped this would be his year with his nomination for best actor in Wolf of Wall Street, but he ending up losing to Matthew McConaughey. DiCaprio says he does this job because he loves it, “not to win prizes”, but let’s face it, I’m sure he wouldn’t have minded winning an Oscar. Don’t worry Leo there is always next year—just remember, “never let go!”
