An Open Letter to My College Best Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sonoma chapter.

It’s senior year, and among all the chaos that is college here, you stand by my side for better or for worse. Sound familiar? No doubt that your college friendships are going to feel like actual relationships. The people you cuddle with, get needy over, and over all would hide a body for if they told you they killed someone. Here’s to the best friend that I made in college:

People are always stressing the importance of a college education but sometimes forget that it is also about the people you meet and experiences you have along the way.  When my supervisor told me that you were going to be my co-worker I was wary from how down to business and organized you were. Here was a person staring me in the face with all this experience and my first reaction was to flee, run the other way and not look back. It wasn’t until the first few weeks that I realized this person was just as awkward and weird as I was.

Going through college with a long distance significant other was hard,  but ending that relationship and getting through the break-up felt nearly impossible. But only nearly, because there you were getting me out of bed, making me eat, and taking me on adventures I had never thought I would go on in college. You not only have made the past year fun-filled but understand my odd quirks that not many people can appreciate (ie. nose touching as a form of thinking.) As Meredith Grey and Christina Yang would put it, I had finally found “my person.” And boy were they right, your person doesn’t need to be a man, it can be your annoying neighbor that knocks on your door at 2 am fully aware that you have no pants on.  Who would have thought that my best friend would end up being a hike-loving, car-singing, coffee fanatic who had an expert talent at spotting a cute boy from a mile away.

Not many people have a friend who would risk it all just to make sure you’re okay. I have accepted that everyone will forever be jealous of our obvious #friendshipgoals and will one day make Instagram posts about the adventures of us.

I can’t think of a better way I would have wanted to spend my last year at college than by your side laughing, singing, fighting, and dancing in the club like it’s 1999. I always rolled my eyes at people who said that your best friend in college will one day become your bridesmaid, yet here I am thinking if I ever do decide to take the big leap and talk to a boy, you will be the one to help me with a pick-up line that will make that boy swoon. This one’s for you and your never ending love and support. I hope you all find a friend like mine!
