Freshman year has been a freaking roller coaster.  I’ve learned so much about myself, and college, and life in general that I never thought I would learn.  But here I am, about to end my freshman year of college.  Who would have ever thought that would happen?  In my Freshman Learning Community class, we are doing quick presentations about what we learned this year and I was inspired to go a bit more in depth for this article.  So future self, if you’re reading this…..have fun.

So I’ll start out with academics. I took a statistics class during the fall semester and I hated it, but I passed it and as much as I hate to admit it, I think it might actually help me with certain aspects of a career in communications.  But now onto me.  The first semester was honestly a roller coaster for me because I have a lot of friends that are still in high school at home, so my transition into college was rough in that sense because I was still so connected with my friends that are still seniors that are about to graduate.  The second semester I found myself branching out a bit more and getting more involved on campus and not going home as much.  It was so easy to just go home whenever I wanted the first semester and I realized that if I ever really wanted to be as involved as I imagined myself being at the beginning of the year, I had to stop being so involved with stuff that was going on at home.

I’ve learned a lot about life and myself this year overall.  I learned how to do laundry, make ramen, live with six other people, and deal with being the only one in my dorm that cleans.  I also learned how to be almost completely independent and not have to tell somewhen where I was going and what I was doing all the time, and of course time management, which I’m still in the process of figuring out.

One thing that I’ve really had to overcome throughout the year was the transition from a private catholic high school with 350 people and 80 in my class, to a college campus with around 9,000 people.  It hasn’t been as bad as I thought it was going to be, but I’m still getting used to it.  The transition into the academics perspective of college was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be, but I guess it wasn’t the best idea to take English 101 and Statistics in the same semester.

I realized through my Freshman Learning Community class that I know communications is what I want to do.  I knew that was into writing and journalism, but now I know I would maybe want to work in a winery, or event planning or photography or radio/tv.  I’m more aware of all the options I have for the future and I’m really excited about where next year will take me.
