5 Hidden Gems At Sonoma State University

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sonoma chapter.

If you are a freshman like me, you might not know yet about the coolest places to hangout on campus. This week, I asked upperclassmen where the best spots at Sonoma State University were. Here are the five hidden gems I have heard about.

  1. The Lakes

The two lakes on campus (located past the Art building) are definitely a sight to see. Students can come to the lakes to take a stroll, study, relax, and even fish! You may even come across some ducks and geese that hang out around the pond. If you find yourself at the lakes, make sure to stop by the Holocaust & Genocide Memorial Grove at the lakeside.

2. Butterfly Garden

The Butterfly Garden, located just past the two lakes, is full of plants that are known to attract butterflies. There are many different types of butterflies you may find at the garden, such as Painted Ladies, Mourning Cloaks, and Pipevine Swallowtails. The Butterfly Garden is the perfect place for a study break with your friends and is one of my personal favorite spots on campus.

3. Leprechaun Garden

The Leprechaun Garden, located near Stevenson Hall, is a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the peacefulness that accompanies the garden. This spot is dedicated to Patrick LaMarca, a student who passed away after from cancer in 1995. If you find yourself at this secluded area, make sure to take a moment to relax and take a breather.

4. 2nd Story of Student Center

If you go to the second story of the student center, you’ll find this small, secluded area to sit and enjoy the view. This beautiful seating area is one that I found while roaming around campus on my first day. Ever since, I have come here almost everyday for a quiet place to study and even watch the sunset.

5. Mario Savio Speakers’ Corner Memorial

While this gem may be one that is not very hidden, it is definitely one that people do not realize is right in front of them. You can find this area in the Stevenson quad. This encourages students and the community to speak freely on issues that may concern them and is a symbol of the right to speak freely in any public area.
