Holiday Aromatherapy: How to Get the Smells of Christmas In Your Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

Christmas is right around the corner and what better way to make your spirits bright than creating the smell of Christmas in your home. Instead of filling your house with chemical air freshener products that try to replicate smells of peppermint, pine, vanilla and cider, a big batch of holiday aromatherapy will do just the trick! Perk up your spirits and bring the smells of Christmas to your home with easy, stove-top potpourri aromatherapy – full of natural ingredients.

The Basics

  • 1 1/2 cups fresh cranberries
  • 3 tangerines, halved
  • 3 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 inch piece fresh ginger
  • 1 vanilla bean and 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 small branch fresh pine
  • 1 cup apple cider, pomegranate or cranberry juice
  • Water

Other Ideas include orange peels, spices, apples, or rosemary

The Process

Place the pot on the stove and fill it with 4 cups of water. Combine all the ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer, adding more water as needed (it will slowly evaporate). Let simmer on the stove, and soon the fragrant pot will fill your home with wonderful Christmas smells throughout the day. Enjoy!
