Eight Days to Look Forward to This October

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

October is widely known as the Halloween month, but it has so much more to offer! These are a few holidays you’ll love celebrating while you wait for All Hallows Eve to arrive!

October 4: National Frappe Day

That’s right, Starbucks lovers! Today is your day! Let National Frappe Day be your excuse to treat yourself to a delicious cold drink in our still-hot Texas October weather. Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino, anyone?

October 6: Mad Hatter Day

Did You Know back in the 8th Century, mercury was used in hat making in a process called “carroting”, and the mercury poisoning drove some hatters mad? The Mad Hatter of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland certainly did! But why is October 6 his day? The fraction on his top hat in the Disney film is 10/6!

Consider it his birthday, instead of his usual unbirthday, and take this opportunity to relax with some tea and any of the many versions of the Alice in Wonderland story!

9: Leif Erikson Day

It’s that time of year again! Sure you could celebrate him being first European to set foot on North American soil… OR you could watch that classic Spongebob episode to give yourself a half hour break from school. Even better, use it to kick off your Fall Break after classes are done!

October 14: National Dessert Day

Not everyone is a big fan of chocolate, for which there is a national celebration later in October, but everyone can appreciate a good dessert! Enjoy something sweet today, or share something with a friend!

October 17: Sweetest Day

While this holiday isn’t popular in the south, SMU students from the Midwest will be familiar with the other Valentine-esque holiday of the year. Celebrated the third Saturday in October, do something sweet for someone in your life, just because you care!

October 25: World Pasta Day

Pile your plate high with your favorite pasta and sauce for World Pasta Day! The first celebration was in Rome, sponsored by the first World Pasta Congress in 1995. Carry on this delicious tradition, even if you’re not Italian!

October 28: National Chocolate Day

October is definitely a food-oriented month, from National Frappe Day to Halloween Candy, so National Chocolate Day is not out of place on October 28! Enjoy a treat today, whether your choose Hershey’s, Godiva, or Ghirardelli!

October 30: Frankenstein Day

Celebrate the classic Halloween monster Frankenstein on the last Friday of October! Check out one of the many horror films about him, or if you prefer a comedy, see him featured in Hotel Transylvania!

Bonus round!

October 19: Evaluate Your Life Day

Not so much something to look forward to, but something that needs to be done in between all these food-themed days.
