Bad Friends: 5 Signs It’s Time to Let Go

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

The first semester is long gone now, and it may seem like some of your friendships are fading away. Some friends aren’t forever, and it can be hard to accept that. Some relationships are worth fighting for, but here are some signs it wasn’t meant to be.

1. You’re the only one making the effort to get together.

A friendship requires mutual effort, like any relationship.

2. When you’re together, they aren’t really with you.

Instead, these “friends” like to stay on their phones talking to and texting with other people.

3. They don’t come to you until they need something.

Some people are going to take advantage of your kindness. Be cautious of fake friends like these.

4. They’re always flaking out on the plans you’ve made.

You could have made them two weeks ago or two days ago, you’re expecting to be disappointed at this point. After all, with low expectations, it can only get better, right? Wrong, you shouldn’t have to have low expectations of a friend in order to be happy

5. You’re never included in the plans they make, even when it’s with a mutual friend.

There’s no feeling like seeing your “friend” in an Instagram picture, having the time of their life with all your friends… except for you. If you feel like this more often than not, it is definitely time to rethink this relationship.
