3 Ways to Revamp Your Family Bonding This Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

The holiday season has arrived! For college students, this usually means going home and spending some quality time with family. This is a season for traditions, but sometimes the same old activities can get boring. So throw out the tired rituals and enjoy these unique ideas for family bonding.

1. Have an Ugly Sweater Making Contest

We’re all familiar with the classic ugly Christmas sweater. And you’ve probably competed in an ugly sweater contest, too! This is a new twist on the classic tradition. Get a sweater for everyone and TONS of craft supplies. Make sure you have glue, thread, bells, and lots of fun things to stick on your sweater. Then, set a time limit and start crafting! Afterwards, have one member of your family or a friend judge to see who has the best, or craziest sweater. To make things more interesting, give a prize to the winner!

2. Go on a treasure hunt

Did you love treasure hunts as a kid? Well, take the great parts- the riddles, prizes, and competition- and amp it up to extreme levels. Have the smartest, or the meanest family member hide a prize and write a series of clues to find it. Make sure the clues are difficult. An example would be having to decode the clues, or solve puzzles to find them. Then, split up the family into teams and let the competition commence. The key to making this fun is keeping the clues difficult and unusual.

3. Christmas Lip Sync Battles

Christmas karaoke is okay, but it’s overdone and it requires you to actually be able to sing. No vocal talent is required for lip syncing! Lip sync battles are a test of bravado, dancing, and swagger. You can even team up and have duet battles. This is another great way to capitalize on your competitive nature- and maybe even win some prizes. Here are a few examples to get you started:
