Review of Restaurants

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMCVT chapter.

As a girl who was born and raised Vermonter, I always get a laugh from my out of state friends who marvel at all the local restaurants, cafes, and coffee shops in Burlington and the surrounding areas. I guess I’ve taken them for granted, but in all honesty, nothing is better than eating out in a unique and scenic location. The local food that Vermont provides makes the eating out experience even better. For Saint Michael’s students, a lot of these places are close by and readily affordable.

The first restaurant is, of course, The Skinny Pancake. Located on the waterfront, the restaurant opened in 2003 and has been a local favorite ever since. Today, the restaurant is always buzzing with a cozy environment open to anyone who walks through the door. The menu has eclectic crepes, which range from sweet to savory and brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “there’s something for everyone”. The Skinny Pancake delivers good food for a good price, especially with its specialty crepes like the “Green Mountain.”

Tiny Thai, located in the Winooski building , about 5 minutes from downtown Burlington, has some of the best Thai food around. I went there for the first time last year, and had a great time eating exotic flavored food and laughing with my suitemate. It’s a restaurant that is simple in its Vermont setting, making it a perfect place to have a meal.

My last suggestion is geared toward those breakfast lovers out there. Penny Cluse Café was started by a chef who had a cooking career in San Francisco and then moved to Vermont.  The owner brings a variety of flavors to this small Burlington café. From homemade granola to gingerbread pancakes and huevos rancheros, everything is delicious. In a world where Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts dominate the on-the-go breakfast scene, there is something about sitting down to a good breakfast.

Although I only named a few restaurants in the Burlington area, there are so many other restaurants to choose from. Burlington is a unique city in that it supports its local eateries. On those days when you’re sick of the cafeteria food, remember these restaurants and dine out!
