Hottest Upcoming Music of 2016

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMCVT chapter.

The end of 2015 set the tune for the New Year. I bet nobody thought they would be a Belieber or crying over their lack of Adele tickets, right? The music scene right now is exploding with new and returning artists. College students are looking for new music to listen to all the time, whether it be for studying or the hottest party. Here are the artists expected to make a huge splash in 2016.

1. Selena Gomez

Two years ago, Selena released a solo album and tour. It was her first attempt at a more mature sound and proving she can stand on her own. It was a great stepping stone because now she’s blowing up the music scene. Her upcoming album, featuring songs such as “Same Old Love” and “Hands to Myself” really capture a more-grownup Selena, free of Justin Bieber drama. With catchy beats and meaningful lyrics, Selena is on track to be one of the top artists this year.

2. Justin Bieber

Last time we saw Justin Bieber, he was getting into trouble with the law and throwing temper tantrums left and right. Well, Bieber is back to say “Sorry” with his new album. I must say, I have never been the biggest fan of Justin Bieber. When I saw him on his “Believe” Tour, he arrived on stage an hour and a half late (so not classy). But, his new album really is great. He has also grown up a bit which really shows in his album. You can’t turn on the radio without hearing a Bieber song and immediately dancing to it. I have to admit, his album is fun. It is definitely worth the money and his “Purpose” tour is going to be huge.

3. Adele

Hello…It’s Adele, and she’s back and better than ever. Adele’s break from the music scene was much deserved and her return was worth the wait. When Adele released “Hello” at the end of October, it jumped to #1 on every chart. It beat “Thriller” on iTunes #1 Spot during Halloween for the first time since “Thriller” was released. That’s insane! Her concert tickets sold out in less than 30 seconds, selling out Madison Square Garden multiple times. If you haven’t jumped on the Adele bandwagon already, you totally should because it is well worth the ride.

4. Halsey

Halsey has been making music waves since opening for Imagine Dragons on their summer tour. Halsey is a cool and relatable girl from New Jersey who exploded on the indie music scene. With her single “Ghost” she hit major radio air. Now, her single “New Americana” off her new album is making a huge impact. She recently sold out a solo show at Madison Square Garden in mid-August 2016. She is in high demand and with famous BFFs like Justin Bieber, there’s no way she won’t be successful.

5. The 1975

After a short hiatus, the 1975 has returned with a more upbeat sound. Their last self-titled album with riddled with the angsty, dark sounds we secretly adore and lead singer Matt Healy sang his way into our hearts with his haunting voice. Now, the English band is back with a lighter sound. It’s hard to compete in the music industry and they changed their sound a little bit to stay relevant, but it’s still just as fun. Their upcoming album “I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It” is set for release February 2016 with a summer tour scheduled. They seamlessly transitioned back into the music scene and their infectious music will not disappoint.

6. Demi Lovato

Gearing up for her summer tour with Nick Jonas, Demi Lovato is ready to take the world by storm. Her recent girl power hits such as “Cool for the Summer” and “Confident” are infectious and you can’t help but dance along. Demi’s confidence is through the roof and she’s releasing some awesome music. It’s great to see her back up there with the hottest female artists. Her tour will be one for the books.

7. The Weeknd

The Weeknd was huge last year, and I expect him to be even bigger this year. His subtle, catchy beats are enough to sell out arenas and there is more to come. Even though he just released an album, I predict we are not too far off from another one. He’s currently a Radio favorite and doesn’t show any signs of stopping.

8. Walk the Moon

“Shut Up and Dance” was one of the hottest songs over the summer. I have yet to know someone who doesn’t know every word to that song. Walk the Moon is getting ready for a second international tour, wrapping up their album “Talking is Loud.” As more singles get released from the album, there’s no way a second one is not in the works. Walk the Moon is one of the best alternative bands out there right now and the more music, the better.
