It seems like the question of “what do you want to do with your life” never ceases to be asked by relatives, teachers, and peers. When we don’t know the answer to that question- we are suddenly told, reassuringly, that we have ‘time’ to figure it out. Our minds immediately disagree. Personally, I have absolutely no idea what to wear every morning, let alone what I want to do for the rest of my life.

I must agree with Diane von Furstenberg. I think that it’s so much more important to think about ‘who’ we want to be, not ‘what’ we want to be. I may not know what career is right for me or what to major in even, but I do know what I hope my future self will be like. I want to be extraordinarily kind and genuine. I want to be the type of woman who laughs constantly and always has a smile on her face. I want to always offer a helping hand. I want to be someone who surrounds herself with loved ones and always has more love to give. More than anything else, I want to be happy and healthy.  No matter what I major in, where I work, and where my life takes me, those two are most significant to me.

Each day, I ask myself what I want to do with my life. I think about what courses I should take, what I could do with a degree in my major, and if I could get that job that I do want.  Maybe finding out ‘what’ we want to be will become easier when we first begin with ‘who.’
