The cold has finally set in and with it has followed cold season. I have been feeling especially crummy and can not seem to shake the congestion, cough, and runny nose. I am no medical professional but from my current condition I thought I would share how I have been treating my symptoms. To help prevent and possibly cure your cold you can follow my acronym; WASTED. WASTED is as much a representation of how I feel as it is a quick reminder to help rid myself of this sickness.

W – wash your hands! I don’t want to nag about the positive personal hygiene of washing your hands but it is very key to do so during cold season. We live in very close proximity to everyone and washing your hands can help decrease the germs we are passing to others as well as ourselves.

A – avoid touching your face! Similarly to washing your hands it is important to keep the germs we do accumulate on our hands away from our eyes, nose, and mouth.

S – sleep! Sleep is needed to function normally so it is crucial to catch as many z’s as possible when facing flu season. It always makes me feel a little bit better to wake up after a full, sometimes Nyquil induced, night’s sleep.

T – Tea! A nice cup of herbal tea with a heavy dose of honey can help soothe any cold symptom. It is also a great way to keep hydrated without forcing yourself to repeatedly chug out of your grimy Nalgene.

E – Eat right! Healthy eating sets the groundwork for a healthy immune system. Minimize dairy intake when you’re feeling congested and switch it up with lots of fruits and/or orange juice for some Vitamin C. This is also a great time to eat lots of soup.

D – Disinfect EVERYTHING! Everyone should have lysol wipes in their room to wipe down everything from your desk to your door knob to try and eliminate as many germs as possible.  Be sure to wipe down your roommate(s) stuff because a cold is something nobody wants to share. Washing your bed sheets is never a bad idea either!
