Campus Fashion: A Week with Casey Lyons

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMCVT chapter.

Having noteworthy fashion in college is incredibly hard to achieve. With 4-5 courses a week plus homework, sports, clubs, and other activities dominating our schedules, who has the time to plan out what to wear to class every day? Even though we all can admit to spending time browsing for outfit inspiration on Instagram or Pinterest, it is much easier to throw on our favorite pair of leggings or sweatpants and call it good. In these colder months, it becomes even more tempting to stay curled up in bed as long as possible instead of getting ready in the morning.

So how does First Year student Casey Lyons look so effortlessly cool and stylish every day? I captured a week’s worth of Casey’s outfits and followed up with an interview to find out. Read on to see for yourself and become inspired by Casey’s style!

Monday:

(urban outfitters surplus jacket. american apparel sweater. levi’s high waisted jeans. converse high top canvas sneakers.)

Casey layered her button down denim shirt and oversized sweater perfectly for a laid-back yet trendy look. These sneakers are adorable and one of Casey’s must-have items.

Tuesday:

(forever 21 blazer. urban outfitters sweater, corduroy jumper, and backpack. dr. martens soft leather boot.)

Casey paired cozy textures and cool colors like cobalt, grey, and black to create a slightly monochromatic look that’s perfect for winter. She emphasized small details by cuffing her jacket sleeve to expose her sweater, bracelet, and Marc Jacobs watch.

Wednesday:

(american apparel striped shirt. thrift shop overalls. hunter chelsea boots.)

On this rainy day, Casey stayed comfy in her slouchy long sleeved shirt and distressed overalls. Her Hunter boots provided a new twist on the classic rain boot.

Thursday:

(levi’s denim jacket and skinny jeans. american apparel sweater. dr. martens chelsea boots. urban outfitters hat. thrift store purse.)

Casey channeled the 90’s with her beanie and shearling collar denim jacket. She matched the leather of her chelsea boots with that of her purse to create this cohesive getup.

Friday:

(banana republic jacket. thrift store striped shirt. urban outfitters cardigan and jeans. dr. martens chelsea boots.)

Casey constructed this chic ensemble by utilizing the bold pop of golden yellow in her jacket to complement the neutral colors of her cardigan and striped mock turtleneck shirt.

Interview of Casey Lyons ’19

Where are you originally from?

Malden, Massachusetts. It’s about a ten minute train to Boston; This summer, I worked at Faneuil hall, and I hung out with my friends there a lot.

What’s your major and what are you involved in on campus?

I’m currently undecided, but I’m learning towards MJD or something in the English department. I’m involved with The Odyssey, and I did a few MOVE events but I wouldn’t say I’m super involved in that….oh and I’m looking forward to the coffee club that’s starting up next week!

How would you describe your style?

I really don’t know. I’m inspired by the modern and minimalist looks of people from home (Boston) and how people are constantly adapting to the new trends. I see new things all the time and I choose what caters to my own style.

Who do you look to for fashion inspiration/advice?

Definitely from just seeing people who walk by in Boston because everyone is really fashionable there. And it’s really corny but my mom, because she’s a fashionista herself; I always liked how she’d dress and she’d let me borrow her clothes. My best friend is always there to give me advice and opinions on my outfits and she helps me choose things to buy. I also like random bloggers on Instagram because they are constantly updating what they wear.

What is your daily beauty/ fashion routine?

Whenever I get dressed it’s usually based on impulsive decisions and is very last minute. Getting ready literally takes like ten minutes….sometimes I’m late. I guess I put things together better when I’m rushed. I’m always doing my hair and I couldn’t live without my hair styling tools and dry shampoo.

If you could spend all your money at one store, what would it be?

Hmm….I wanna say a thrift store….I don’t know one in particular, but any thrift store. They have a wide variety of things to buy and so many hidden treasures. Everything is unique.

What staple fashion items could you not live without?

That’s a really good question….My watch definitely. I always have to have a bag on me, either my backpack or a purse. My white sneakers…I wear those all the time. And a jean jacket.

What do you love most about fashion?

I guess I love that it recycles itself and that old things are constantly coming back; Nothing is really permanently out of style.

Thank you, Casey!
