Review: Starbuck’s Smoked Butterscotch and Citrus Green Tea Lattes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

We all know Starbucks: the casual coffee retailer that graces our lives with caffeinated beverages. Not all people embrace Starbucks with arms as open as mine, but even when battled against harsh critics, it’s difficult to argue that Starbucks remains stagnant. They frequently release new beverages and food options, expanding their market with every product, and consistently adjusting to keep customers interested.

On February 16th, Starbucks decided to change our lives, releasing two new lattes: the Smoked Butterscotch Latte and the Citrus Green Tea Latte.  We all know how hard it is to order a new beverage without having tried it, so I selflessly decided to do the job for you. So here is a review of both the Smoked Butterscotch Latte and the Citrus Green Tea latte.

Review: The Smoked Butterscotch Latte

4/5 stars

At first glance this looks like your average flavored latte: white foam, with a sprinkle of spice. I drew in closer, and the smell was a strangely intriguing, sweet, and caramel scented. Then came the taste test. The drink itself was very rich and super sweet. The smoke flavor was not detectable, but even without it, tasted quite delicious. Similarly, the butterscotch flavor hid the taste of coffee until the aftertaste. So for all those who dislike the taste of coffee, but need a dose of caffeine, this is the drink to try. Overall, this drink could be deemed a success. It was quite delicious, yet nothing out of the ordinary for a Starbuck’s flavored latte.

Review: The Citrus Green Tea Latte

2/5 stars

Unlike the Smoked Butterscotch latte, this drink started off on a bad note. It reeked of artificial lemon flavoring, and the putrid green color resembled that of pea soup or a suburban mother’s kale smoothie. After a rough start with the sight and smell, I was reluctant to try it. Turns out, I was right. The green tea flavor was very strong, battling the equally strong lemon taste. Nothing about it was refreshing, or light. But, in all honesty, green tea lattes are not what I regularly order, and maybe to a true green tea latte lover, this is quite delicious. But the honest reality is that this drink failed to win my heart.
