How To Make Your Window Seat Cozy For Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

If you want to make your window seat the place to be this fall, here are a few tips to jazz it up.

  1. Put a sheet over the cushion

Target has cute cheap sheets- get a pattern that matches your color scheme and fold it over the generic green cushion that was there when you moved in. We got a simple white sheet with a black chevron pattern. It has made the space look much cleaner and more zen, and ties it in with the rest of the room. An added bonus is that a sheet makes for easy cleaning, as you can throw it right in the wash if you spill a hot beverage on it (guilty- Morgan).

2. Bring in some warm lighting

If you really want your window seat to feel warm and cozy on cool fall nights, adding some string lights or a lantern is a must. My roommates and I were not big fans of the bright white light on the wall in the window seat. The easiest solution to this is to hang string lights in your window seat using command strips. You can find string lights at places like Target, Amazon and Urban Outfitters. If you really want to transform your window seat you can even get a paper lantern. We got ours at The Northshire Bookstore downtown and it has made the space much more inviting.

3. Succulents, flowers, and pumpkins

Another easy way to liven up your window seat (no pun intended) is by adding plants. My roommates and I have multiple succulents in our window that we got from one of the vendors at the Saratoga Farmers market. The farmers market is a great place to find small pumpkins and gourds, along with beautiful flowers that add a lot of aesthetic appeal to your window seat.

4. Comfy pillows and a throw blanket

Comfy pillows are a necessity for creating a cozy window seat. Our other roommate was kind enough to supply us with a fuzzy grey backrest pillow that allows us to comfortably lounge and enjoy the view. We also have a large fuzzy white pillow that ties in our color scheme, and gives some added comfort if we’re feeling particularly sleepy and decide to curl up and nap (or if we accidentally fall asleep while studying for midterms). We would also recommend getting a throw blanket to keep folded on the window seat to keep you warm as the weather gets cooler.

5. Multi-surface markers

Lauren brought some multi-surface markers when she moved in, and used her artistic skills to liven up our window. You can get these markers at Northshire Bookstore (can you tell we’re big fans?), and they will instantly give your window some personality. Lauren drew a little sun and a “be happy”, and it adds a cute and homey touch to our space. Doodles and positive messages make our window seat the best spot in our room.
